I phone won't sync with i tunes, only recognises camera and scanner wizard. Updates and reinstalls done, still won't work. HELP!!!

I have uninstalled and reinstalled i tunes. The i phone is 3g 8 gig model. Windows is updated, all apple applications are switched on. I tunes is latest version. Unable to sync any music from i tunes and the only option when you click i phone in i tunes is eject. Seems to be a common problem but no one seems to have a definitive answer. Using windows xp, sp3. Strange as i pod nano syncs fine but i phone does not.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

If the iPhone has had a jailbreak run on it that would explain why it can't sync.

You may also need to do a hard reset on the iPhone.

With the iPhone off, connect the dock cable to the bottom of the iPhone. Make sure the USB end is NOT connected to anything. Next hold down on the "Home" button. While holding down on the "Home" button, connect the USB cable to your Mac or PC, and keep holding down the "Home" button tell you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen on the iPhone. This should initiate a reset, and should let you reset the iPhone via iTunes.

If the iPhone does not power up when you hook the USB docking cable to your computer, then you will need to hit the power button on the top of the iPhone. Just make sure to keep holding down on the "Home" button.

NOTE: This technique will more than likely WIPE OUT ANY DATA you have or had on the iPhone. You have been warned!

The phone is on an O2 contract. We took it to an O2 shop and it connected to their itunes immediately so looks like it is an itunes problem rather than the phone. The apple mobile device had been switched off, I went to swith it on at the same time as about to close the computer down to restart, it started to sync but was already closing down, it lost connection/sync and has not recognised it since. I removed i tunes but not the other apple programmes so I'll try that and restart the computer and then reinstall all apple software and see if that works. If still no joy will contact apple somehow. Thanks for the advice though.

Before you uninstall iTunes you may want to reset your sync history. This may solve an iTunes sync issue.
On Mac: Open iSync (Finder -> Applications - iSync). Go to Preferences and choose "Reset Sync History".
On Windows: Open iTunes and choose Edit -> Preferences. Select the Sync tab and choose to reset sync history.

As I posted here (http://www.mahalo.com/answers/ipod/restore-wont-work-on-a-ipod-touch) you may want to reset the preferences for iTunes. A reinstall of iTunes should reset its preferences, but in case it doesn't here's how to manually reset the iTunes preferences.

There are cases when iTunes crashes, or during a sync, device restore, device backup, or for what ever reasoner iTunes preferences become damaged. The result can be flaky syncing with one or more iPods/iPhones and iTunes. The simples solution is to reinstall iTunes on the computer where you are trying to do the recovery (make sure to back up your iTunes library FIRST).

But if this doesn't work, or you don't want to go through the reinstall, you can also manually reset iTunes. But this is NOT for the faint of heart, and some settings will be lost.

If you want to try and reset iTune manually you can use the following instructions.

NOTE: This will reset your iTunes preferences (but you won't lose, or at least you shouldn't lose music). Some of your settings will be lost! TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
________________________________________________

For Windows:

1. Quit iTunes
2. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes
3. Now find:
- iTunesPrefs.xml
4. Move this file to a temp folder somewhere (like the desk).
5. Restart the computer
6. Open iTunes
7. Try to connect the iPod Touch (using the hard rest method outlined above), and see if it will sync.

If this works, then you can throw away the temp folder that's holding the old preference files\.
If it doesn't work (and you've tried everything above), then I think you've come to the end of the road, and Apple may be your only recourse.

On a Mac:

1. Quit iTunes
2. Go to your user "Home Directory" > Library > Preferences
3. Now find:
- com.apple.iTunes.eq.plist
- com.apple.iTunes.plist
- com.apple.iTunesHelper.plist
- com.apple.iPod.plist
4. Move those four files to a temp folder somewhere (like the desktop).
5. Restart the computer.
6. Open iTunes
7. Try to connect the iPod Touch (using the hard rest method outlined above), and see if it will sync.

If this works then, you can throw away the temp folder that's holding the old preference files.
If it doesn't work (and you've tried everything above), then I think you've come to the end of the road, and Apple may be your only recourse.

NOTE: In either of the above you can also restore your old preferences for iTunes by simply moving the files back (from the temp folder) to their original locations.

This may seem like a silly question, but have you contacted Apple Computer customer service or gone to an Apple Store? As the manufacturer of the iPhone they are going to be very willing to work with you to diagnose your issue right away...in my opinion, you will be better off here instead of trying to tinker around.

You should be able to sync individual applications (itunes) and even play lists from the syc drop down menu and then option tabs.

Good luck to you!

Best of luck to you, remember too that software updates are out there as of 9/9/09 for many Apple 'programmes' - including iTunes...check them out by going to your 'software updates' tab or reviewing the Apple web site!
