I opened a new Twitter account and almost immediately, all these people are following me. How?
I just opened the account today and during the course of the day I got about 10 follows from people who know me. I didn't tweet on it. The only thing identifying its me is my email address.
How do they do this?

Oh, wait, they know you? I just erased my past answer. Twitter has a "find on other networks" option where people can enter their Yahoo credentials, for instance, and Twitter will scan their address book for other users - by email - who are on Twitter already. So, for someone who has your email address in their address book, you would come up - and they could decide to start following you, without you ever saying anything. This is a standard social network trick for getting people to build up their network of friends fast - Facebook uses the same idea.
If these people know you, that's probably how they did it. if they do not know you, they're spam bots hoping you will follow back - don't.
