I need an CMS that revolves less around posts/pages and more around events. Suggestions?

The site I'm building is for a performance venue, which has a regular schedule of upcoming events. I'd like to maintain a (subscribe-able) calendar of these events while featuring some and giving in-depth info (text, images, videos) on all of them. Something like wordpress would be awesome but obviously after the event has happened the information should be automagically archived/disappear from the home page...

Any ideas? Thanks!

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

1)
Your requirements:
  • performance venue, which has a regular schedule of upcoming events
  • maintain a (subscribe-able) calendar
  • featuring some [events]
  • giving in-depth info (text, images, videos) on [events]
  • wordpress would be awesome
  • information should be automagically archived/disappear
2)
Based on your requirements, I reccomend WordPress and Google Calendar.  Both are free and will give you most of the functionality you require.

Wordpress:
http://wordpress.org/

Google Calendar Plugin For Wordpress:
http://code.google.com/p/wpng-calendar/

3)
Notes on your reqirements:
performance venue, which has a regular schedule of upcoming events
Based on this, I see a large calendar listing upcoming events for a concert venue that hosts multiple bands at the same and different times.  Additionally, you want to highlight bands and provide detailed information.

maintain a (subscribe-able) calendar
Google Calendar is easily subscribable in a number of ways.  This is the reason I would use Google Calendar.  Folks can subscribe to RSS feeds, import data into their iCal, Outlook, Blackberries, iPhones all automatically.

featuring some [events]
Wordpress can be modified slightly to keep the large Calendar of Events at the top of the page while your "highlighted" posts appear underneath.

giving in-depth info (text, images, videos) on [events]
In the detail of each event within your Google Calendar, you can add anything you'd like.  Text, Imags, Videos, etc.  Personally, I'd keep the calendar of events free of large images and videos so that folks who subscribe to your calendar don't have to wait for a long time for the calendar to sync.  In a WordPress (featured) post you can of course also add anything you'd like.

wordpress would be awesome
Done and done :)

information should be automagically archived/disappear
Wordpress has aging rules that you can apply.  However, I might leave everything up on the site to increase your search engine value and provide an archive of performers.

A couple of additional thoughts:
Have a computer / laptop handy for performers to contribute before a show.

Consider giving performers the ability to sell their merchandise directly on the site.  Ecommerce is wicked easy with http://www.e-junkie.com/

Promote the site at every opprotunity in the venue.  Full color business cards are cheap (under $20 per 1000).  Make sure everyone attending leaves with one telling them that there is more to see / hear on the website.  An online coupon for a discount to the next show will also give people a reason to go to the site.

Google Calendar can subscribe to events from other Google Calendars.  Add value to your calendar by linking up similar events and venues.  It's the internet, share!

I hope that this helps Recreant!

Which platform and database type do you need?

For example:

If you want a PHP platform that supports MySQL then I would suggest Joomla or Drupal.

Drupal has a module called "Content Construction Kit" for events.
http://drupal.org/

Joomla has an event calendar module as well.
http://www.joomla.org/

PHP/MySQL would probably be best, thanks.
