Medieval castles were built by the Normans in England,with a scheme of defense.
Built in large towns these stood guarded for river valleys,main channels of traffic, forts, bridges and the tenants from neighbors attack.
Depending upon the system of defense they were of two types,
1.castles with keep:
These were either rectangular keeps,shell keeps-- which were of typical Norman origin and Circular keeps of early english.
2. Keep-less castles:
These were castles of Enceinte ,where KEEPS were discarded and along with the state,domestic apartments were also built. This became common in 15Th century.
Finally during the reign of Edward III the castles were replaced into palaces.
