I need a new book - any suggestions? I love theology books...not a big fan of fiction.

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

James Kugel's The Bible As It Was is a fascinating discussion of early Biblical interpretation, especially the Old Testament. It shows how people's ideas back then had a big influence on today, but also how sometimes ancient interpretations were completely different from ours.
Kugel also has this book: http://www.amazon.com/How-Read-Bible-Guide-Scripture/dp/0743235878/ref=pd_sim_b_2

Of course you could go to the classics like Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Wesley, etc.

For lesser known theologians, you could look at the recently rediscovered writings of someone like Hildegard von Bingen who was ahead of her times.

There is also this books on Psalms - it is very detailed and rather technical but if you're used to reading theology it might be fine. Basically it gives a detailed reading of every Psalm.

If you are looking for Theology there are always a few classics:

Calvin's Commentaries
Augustine - City of God (or any of his other works)
The Westminster Catechism

Or some newer more contemporary theologians:

Any of C.S. Lewis - Mere Christianity, Screwtape Letters, etc.
J.I. Packer - Knowing God
Tim Keller - The Reason for God

I always enjoy a few non-typical books as well to challenge my thinking and better understand (or defend against) other points of view, such as:
George H. Smith - Atheism: The Case Against God
source(s):
My own reading and suggestions given to me by friends.
