I need a lap-based solution for mousing on my Lenovo Thinkpad X200s. The little pointer-stick just ain't doing it for me.
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Notably, this trackball looks small enough to be portable, usable and still stylish:

I think that's direction I'm heading. I already have lapboard, but it's really much too large for my subnotebook. I'm really surprised that someone hasn't tried updating the sidecar trackballs to market a USB device. Heck, they sell sillier things like USB-powered pencil sharpeners, why not update an old classic?
I think that the Kingston one was really designed to be handheld.
Not that you couldn't stick it to the side of your laptop if you wanted, but I'd think that moving the ball around with your thumb on the couch would be pretty comfortable.
I remember the old red and black trackballs that would attach to IBM and other laptops.
If it was me, on my couch... I might buy a thin piece of plexi-glass and put it under the laptop extending out the right hand edge. This would give me a psudo table top that I could place a trackball on. I might go so far as to velcro both the plexi to the laptop and the trackball to the plexi for stability. Just an idea though.
The Kensington at the top looks closest to what I am after, except for the whole needing some place to actually place the device while I'm sitting at the couch. I'm guessing I'm going to have to rig something with velcro and a small piece of plastic or wood for the base.
I completely agree with you. That style of trackball really should be updated.
