Ten selected facts about François-Marie Arouet a.k.a. Voltaire

01. real name - François-Marie Arouet;
02. born - 21 November 1694;
03. died - 30 May 1778;
04. imprisoned in the Bastille for eleven months, in 1717, because of a satirical piece he wrote about the French government of the time;
05. he spent 3 years in exile in England, from 1726 to 1729, where he got interested in work of John Locke, and that of Sir Isaac Newton;
06. initiated into Freemasonry on 4 April 1778;
07. denied a burial in church ground due to his criticism of the church;
08. in 1814, a group of right-wing religious fundamentalists stole Voltaire’s remains and dumped them onto a garbage heap;
09. Voltaire's heart is being kept in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris;
10. Voltaire's brain was also removed after his death, but, after passing from hand to hand, over some 100 years, it disappeared after an auction.
