I may be alone on this but I'll ask anyway...
Why are answers here SOOOOO pretentiously drawn out? Seriously, cacoëthes typendi? Good grief!

Tip for best answer: M$0.47
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Best Answers. Hands down.

Like it or not, a lot of people skim the answers, not really reading them, and think -- consciously or not -- that length equals quality. The same goes for pictures, add-ons, or other flashy things like that. Those answers get more votes and more Best Answers, and those people get more Mahalo Dollars. And even the minimum tip is more than a lot of managed pages will make in a month.

Not all of them are long and drawn out. However, I think short yes and no answers are very much a waste of time. So maybe a middle ground would be a thoughtful and maybe less wordy answer?

Yes. I agree. H.W. Fowler would have a field day with all the run-on sentences and what not. Straightforward is always the best, unless you wish to appear like a pedant. LOL

Oh, no no no, @Vicgoodwin - I was referring to @strabismus, not you. I'm so sorry I wasn't clear about that! You are an awesome contributor here on Maholo! Strabismus has been insulting someone I consider a friend, and my response was to HIS comment, not you at all!

And yet another insult? Someone should take away your ability to use $5 words until you learn to use them without angst.

I certainly meant no insult. I love the answers on Mahalo except the yes and no ones. I was simply finding a middle ground.

It is a good question, strabismus, and one that I have also considered and written about.

My conclusion is that a major reason is the incentive to be chosen as "best answer". It is a bit paradoxical that the incentive encourages many of us to contribute an answer, but we then feel like quantity will impress the questioner or the folks who vote.

I could go on and on about this, but.... ;-)

Did you ever think that maybe the long answers are so we can ensure we have thoroughly answered the question asked?

I think this was the rudest and worst question I've seen on here yet. I'll remember to never answer any of your questions, especially when you call people out by name and insult them.

I agree with Commenter #2's response to strabismus's unfavorable comment about another member. If you have concerns about another member's actions, the appropriate way to address it is through a private question to that particular member. Mahalo Answers is not an appropriate forum for airing your personal disagreements with other members. I believe that a public apology is in order.

Imagine my surprise at seeing my screen name (or a corruption thereof) when I came in to vote on this thread. If the OP had a problem with me (or my style), it would have been more appropriate that he contact me directly instead of insulting me in public. The original question insults every member who takes the time and effort to thoroughly answer questions.

My guess for those long drawn out answers is that some people like the look of their own typing.

Some think that all the knowledge in their heads is relevant and valuable.

Some think more is more.

Don't you just love the
simple eloquence that a
haiku poem can give?
