The best thing for you to do is buy a iPhone 3G (no bull)(and no im not a fanboy and infact don't like apple all that much), and while i don't recommend it *ahem..bullsh* ahem* OSX86 project has just jailbroken it and is releasing software free to everyone new years eve so it will be able to be used on any network even pre-paid.
Apple has re-enabled at home installation so you can just buy one outright and do as you will with it when you get home.
And while im loving the G1's compass ability i still say the iPhone will allow you to GET THE MOST "DONE" (extra stress on the 'DONE')
