I just read that Mark Recchi signed a one year contract with the Boston Bruins. The 2010 - 2011 season will be his 22nd in t
he NHL. Gordie Howe scored 71 points in 70 games at the age of 42, for the best season ever at that age. Do you think Recchi can surpass those numbers? He scored 43 points last season and would have to nearly double that production. Is it possible ? Do you think Recchi should have retired? What are your thoughts?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I suppose anything is "possible", but I don't think there is much of a chance that Recchi will score over 70 points. He hasn't scored more than 70 points since the 2003-4 season and would seem highly unlikely that his production would pick up significantly at this point.
Still, the Bruins obviously think that Recchi can contribute to their team (otherwise, it wouldn't make much sense to sign him), so I think it's his call whether to retire or not. For superstars, I think there is something to going out at their peak (it leaves us with the last memory being one of the best). For guys like Recchi, I think one way he can improve his legacy is to continue to contribute late into his career.
