I JUST GOT A Wii!!! Urgent!! I need to know what the best games for the Wii are!

I got a Wii!!!

http://zarius.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/wii_box.jpg

My father decided to surprise me early for my birthday. It's a total surprise because he already got me something. He didn't get me any games, because he wasn't sure what I would want.

I have no clue what I should get. Any thoughts?

Answer quickly before I get it out of the box and hook it up (you'll likely never see me again once that happens).

Congrats on the Wii.

First off, you said you like simulation games. Because of that, I must recomment Animal Crossing City Folk. My sister got it for Christmas and I have had little opportunity to play my Wii since. If you want something a little more mature, any My Sims game would be a good choice.

Next, you probably also want some party games. First, I recommend Mario Kart Wii. It is very popular and has very unique controls. Next, Guitar Hero. Buy Guitar Hero World Tour if you want the full band set (expensive), otherwise, buy the game with what you consider to be the best soundtrack. Finally, Mario Party 8 is a fun game to play with four people. It features a plethora of mini games that will keep you busy for awhile. If you plan on connecting your Wii to the internet, I recommend visiting the Wii Shop Channel and downloading Tetris Party. Its a great game for Tetris lovers and often features tourneyments where the winner receives Wii Points.

You should also consider Wii Play. The nine games it includes seem cheap, but the included Wii Remote justifies the $50 price.

Finally, a word of advice from a fellow Wii owner. Despite what Nintendo says, Wii's run rather warn if WiiConnect24 Standby connection is turned on. I recommend turning it off, but if you must have it on (the news channel requires it), take extra care to not place it on a carpet, near any heat-producing object, or leave the games in it when it is off.

If you buy The Legend Of Zelda, Twilight Princess, you can do the famous "Twilight Hack". This allows you to install the homeade Homebrew Channel, which allows you to play copied Wii games (made for archival purposes in case of damaged disc, of course) and play DVD movies. If you plan on performing this hack, though, be sure to procede with caution as it will void your warranty and may damage your Wii. Also, make sure you do it before upgrading to Wii System Menu Version 4.0, as it does not yet work with the new menu. More information can be found here: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Twilight_Hack

Have Fun!

First question I have to ask is what sort of gamer are you? I mean shooter, action, sports, family, strategics, etc etc.

If you go by so called experts....

Super Mario Smash Bros. Brawl

Super Mario Galaxy

Warioware: Smooth Moves

Resident Evil 4

Ooo, good question. I like simulation games (Sims, etc.) I stay away from war games and battle simulations.

Since you say you enjoy games like The Sims, I'll work with that then throw in a few others:

MySims:
This game is also published by EA, who brings The Sims to store shelves. It's a much different experience though, as the characters are much more catroony and the gameplay centers on building things. From homes, furniture, and decoration, every aspect of your little town can be handled directly or with the help of preset blueprints. You can make whatever you wish for the most part, but sometimes townsfolk will ask for things. Doing this involves finding the right "essence" which is used to color objects along with the right blueprint. It's pretty fun and can be played in short bursts or over longer sessions.

MySims Kingdom:
I haven't played this one, but I've read the emphasis is less on creating objects and a little more on the questing side of things. Completing requests for townsfolk and whatnot.

Animal Crossing:
Closer to The Sims in spirit than the MySims series, Animal Crossing makes you a resident of a quiet town, where fishing, bug hunting, digging for fossils, and chatting with townsfolk is as high impact as it gets. It's easy to pick up and learn, hard to put down, and requiring a lot of time if you want to amass all that there is in the game. It's also a title that prides itself on being just as fun in short spurts as it is over long sessions. Plus it has some online features so you can visit with or invite friends over. Additionally, the Wii Speak mic gives you the chance to chat with visitors online.

If you like to play with groups of people, I'd recommend:

Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party:
It's the latest in the franchise, putting you and up to three friends in short competitions. The games are fun and funny, and very easy to learn. Plus the presentation is one of the more creative I've seen in games.

Mario Kart Wii:
If you know of the series, you'll be right at home. It's a racing game with Nintendo's own Mario and all his friends. The learning curve is easy with different control and gameplay options to suit any skill level. There's cartoony, goofy combat to go along with the over-the-top courses. The inclusion of online play also means there will never be a shortage of people to play with.

Wii Play:
If nothing else, this game offers some fun multi player games and an additional Wii Remote at no additional cost. I feel like the games are a bit short lived, but I know a lot of people enjoy it and it continues to sell very well. Plus another controller is a great incentive to try it out.

And one personal recommendation:

Bloom Blox:
A lot of reviews draw similarities to Jenga, but Bloom Blox is only so on the surface. The game rules encourage different types of play, from knocking over blocks in as few turns as possible to carefully removing blocks to keep structural balance. There are plenty of rewards unlocked as you play, most features for its level creator. I feel this is a nice way to get creative and experiment, especially since you can share levels online as well as try out those made from other players. There is some multiplayer stuff too, but lacks the depth or polish of the single player experience.

I hope those sound like the direction you're looking for. Have fun!

I just got a Wii, too! Get Wii Play. It comes with a 2nd Wiimote and has 9 different quick and easy games to play like Find Mii, Table Tennis, Pose Mii, Laser Hockey, Billiards, Fishing, Charge! (cow racing), and Tanks! (fun little game where you control a toy tank and shoot around at other toy tanks).

In my opinion, the Wii was designed to be played with friends, and every game here is friend-friendly. Simple to learn, hours of fun.

You'll have plenty of fun playing Wii Sports. Don't worry...

At some point (judging by your like of Sims and the like) you'll want to pick up:

Super Paper Mario (excellent platformer)
Zack and Wiki (point-and-click puzzle game)
Zelda: Twilight Princess (action adventure)
Animal Crossing (sim... but only if you must... I'm SO done with Animal Crossing games)

I also recommend:

Mario Kart Wii (then contact me so we can exchange Friend Codes and we can play against eachother)
Dokapon Kingdom (multiplayer board game fun for the whole family)
Wario Ware Smooth Moves (frantic multiplayer fun for the whole family)

Our family just got a Wii this past Christmas. WIth a 6 YO and 3YO, the interactive games are the best. We also love playing it together and when our friends come over. With that in mind, here are some of the games on our wish list:
Boom Blox - its like Jenga on Wii Steroids and a blast to play with friends.
Wii Fit - because we like the exercise part of the Wii
Wii Music - as a handbell ringer, that is the best part of Wii Music
Mario Cart - a recomendation from a friend.

If you like music rythem games, I suggest Samba De Amigo. It's a really fun game. If you liked the legend of zelda games then get twilight princess. Mario kart, Super Mario Galaxy are really good to. Also Cooking Mama is a really fun game.

Based on my Personal Experience here are the best games for everyone.
Boom Blox
Lego Star Wars
Wii Fit
Super Smash Bros Melee

Those are the games I find myself playing on the Wii along with Wii Sports. My parents (who are in their 60s) like playing Wii Sports as well as Boom Blox. I think that if you can only get one game I'd go for Boom Blox.
Enjoy your Wii and also try out Gamefly or another game rental service if you want to try out various options for Wii Games.

Wii Music - A poor man's Guitar Hero. But Guitar Hero gets so hard after the fourth finger most people give up on it. You'll keep playing Wii Music for hours and hours.

Lego Star Wars the Complete Saga - can get it at Costco for $14.99 and it has about 1,000 hours of gameplay in it. Absolutely the most gaming for the least money on the face of the planet. And the game is super, super fun.

Wii Sports - It comes with your Wii, just start playing it! Bowling and baseball are awesome. Just don't throw your wiimote at the screen.

While some might not agree with this answer, it is a LONG cry from being unhelpful. It is an opinion question and expressing your opinion while saying WHY you feel that way is ALWAYS helpful.

NO! Do NOT buy Wii Music. It's aweful.

I'd have to partially agree with @drmatt that Wii Music is definitely not what you think it will be. Not awful in my opinion, but definitely not RockBand, Guitar Hero or like any other rhythm game you've played.

The best Wii games really depend on your mood. Obviously, you already have Wii Sports which is a great game and you'll probably still think that a year from now.

If you're feeling calm and rested and you don't feel like doing a whole lot of work, then I'd recommend "Animal Crossing: City Folk." It's a Sim-like game; it's been described as a game where there's a lot to do, but not a lot that you have to do.

http://wiimedia.ign.com/wii/image/article/889/889736/animal-crossing-city-folk-20080715111432107_640w.jpg

If you're feeling like you want to release a lot of energy, I'd recommend "Guitar Hero III" or "Guitar Hero World Tour". In my opinion, the Guitar Hero series is one of the most addicting games I've ever played.

http://www.dibumania.com/series-dibujos-anime/2009/03/guitar-hero-iii-legends-of-rock-20071005095716049.jpg

If you want to play a classic game with a modern twist then I'd recommend "Super Paper Mario." It's a sidescroller most of the way through (like "Super Mario Bros."), but you can also move to 3D mode, which is very interesting.

http://wiimedia.ign.com/wii/image/article/776/776949/super-paper-mario--20070329001824729_640w.jpg

Other good games are "Super Mario Galaxy," "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess," "Mario Kart Wii," and "Super Smash Bros. Brawl."

While I'm at it, it's also important to know which games aren't very good. I would not recommend either "Sonic and the Secret Rings" or "Wii Play." "Sonic and the Secret Rings" is a fun game for about an hour and then the controls get really difficult to maneuver and you'll find that you won't be playing it as much as the other games. "Wii Play" is another game that is fun for a little while, but it gets old quickly. The minigames are fairly easy to master, and from there, there's no way to improve any more.

Enjoy your Wii!

It's good to see the potential in games being taken seriously in mainstream but some of the content of this article is a bit off, particularly the support for the 'ville' series of facebook games which are essentially online crack designed to rake in constant micro-payments from users. Hardly a positive influence.
