Because you don't have AppleCare, you are going to have to pay for the repair to your iPhone. Typically, an Apple Store or the 1-800 support team will replace your iPhone and take yours back to fix it and then put it back into the pool of remanufactured units for customers like you.
Fortunately, the cost of the replacement is less than the cost of buying a new iPhone. However, if AT&T is offering you a subsidized price to upgrade to the new iPhone 3G, then that may be your best bet.

M$It'll cost you more than the phone is worth to fix.

M$Warranty would not help as it is for 1 yr only
What I did was backup the iPhone to my iTunes first
Then did a restore on the iPhone, it did solved the problem
I went to apple customer care & the guy did the same thing lol
I don't know what fortune it will cost, can trade it in and get a used one also :-)
