I have terrible sinus drainage at night when I lay down to sleep. Does anybody know what might be causing this

I've tried everything I know without any luck. I was wondering about some herbal remedies maybe?

I had a similar problem for years until I learned I was allergic to dust mites. I visited and allergist to find that out. Per his instructions, I put hypoallergenic covers on my mattress and pillows and made sure I changed the sheets more frequently (at least once a week) and my problems were pretty much cured. Lots of folks are allergic to dust mites, which love to live in bedding.

We all have several sinus cavities, the largest of which are the maxillary sinuses. They're a pair beneath our eyes in the skull. There are drainage points for each of these. If you have fluid in one of those sinuses from an infection or minor blockage, it may discharge when you lay on your bed with your head facing one way. You may find that there is no drainage at all if you lay on the other side. The first time I had a major sinus drain while about to fall asleep it was very disturbing.

I'm not a doctor, and I don't even play one on TV.

But I've had pretty good success figuring out lots of things my family and friends have had, and I may be one of the only lay people who've actually read the Merck Diagnostic Manual (several editions).

Sounds like you have a chronic sinus problem that only happens at night? Surely what's draining out is being produced during the day. Do you work in an environment where there are many chemicals present, or many plants? Because it could be an allergy, and it could be a reaction to chemicals. And if a virus, bacteria or fungus has taken root in all the extra moisture, it could make you pretty sick.

It's best to treat the cause, rather than the symptoms. Treating sinus problems with decongestants can actually make the long-term problem worse by not allowing the sinuses to get rid of what's irritating them!

So think about your environment. Once you have figured out what could be causing your sinuses to react, please post and I'll try to be more specific.

I have had this condition for years. There are several reasons for this but most of them are related to light allergies. When I feel this coming on at night, I take a half tab of Actifed and this helps to control it.

What causes sinus drainage due to allergies and environmental factors could be greatly aided by proper hydration. Many times, you may not drink enough fluids to thin out your mucosal secretions which can cause abnormal sinus drainage. Just by getting plenty of fluids (barring the dehydrating alcohol and caffeine) you can greatly reduce the factor of what causes sinus drainage. Using a humidifier will help this through the night. Keep yourself propped up with a pillow wedge or a nice firm pillow, seriously if you can fold your pillow in half and it stays folded in half then it's time to get a new one.

Commonly used medical therapies, including saline nasal sprays, humidification, moisturization and nasal irrigation can be very effective for anyone suffering from chronic sinus infections.

Home remedies can work… Try the following: boil purple cabbage leaves (about 5), previously washed in the faucet, in about a quart of water for about 15 minutes, let it stand a while and inhale the vapor. Let it out in the open overnight and wash your face with the water in the morning. Repeat this daily until you see an improvement. At first, you will notice that you will drain thick as your sinuses get clean and as days go by, it will will clear up until it ceases. Do the inhaling at night, preferably, before going to bed. It won't hurt to try, besides the sulphur content in cabagge is also good for the skin.

You should go see an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) Doctor or an Allergist. If you have been having this issue for a month then you most likely will not get better spontaneously and over the counter medicines and herbals are not likely to help. In general you should not be experiencing any weird bodily state for more than a week or two without consulting a medical professional.

I am not a doctor but I would suspect that you either have an allergic reaction to something you encounter on a daily basis or you have a sinus infection. If you go and see a specialist they should be able to diagnose you quickly.

If you do not have insurance or can't afford to see a specialist you should still consider seeing your normal physician or at least speaking with your pharmacist. Pharmacists can be an extremely helpful first line of medical advice and speaking with them is free.
