I have knee pain when only when bending my knee. Possible causes / solutions?

Yesterday, I was doing some physical activity - during which I didn't notice any pain or didn't injure myself in any manner that was obvious at the time. About 3 hours later I started to notice that when I would bend my knee, there would be significant pain. However, this would only be during the action of lifting my leg. For instance, standing straight up, and putting normal or even increased pressure on my leg, I would experience no pain. But when I try and lift my leg (bending at the knee) to make an L-Shape, that would cause significant pain. Laying down I can make that same L-Shape with my leg but there is less pain when there is less strength required. This pain has persisted and has gotten maybe 5-10% better in the past 8 hours.

What are the possible causes of this pain and any recommended courses of action to treat it?

If you were kneeling continuously or bending and twisting while gardening the stress on the ligaments at the top of your knee might have caused the pain. Use hot and cold therapy to reduce any swelling or pain, and rest your leg.

Avoid any activity that puts undue stress on your knee, like twisting, kneeling, squatting, jogging, bicycling or climbing stairs. Give it a few days and it may return to normal. If the area is quite swollen and feels hot, then you should probably check with your doctor to make sure you haven't torn something that may need surgical repair.

I voted NBA.

This answer addresses just one possible cause. Moreover, your source doesn't support this suggested cause, because gardening isn't even mentioned.

Well it could be muscle strain or you bend your knee to far or something, best to go see a doctor if you're unsure, but it'll probably go away after a few days

It's possible that your knee cap is sliding more than it should and the cartilage under it is being slowly worn away, this can be due to the lack of tendons on the lateral sides of your knees, I have the same problem but in my family ( me, my two sisters and my dad) have knee problems because we don't have tendons in the sides of our knees so the knee cap slides more than it should which can lead to arthritis in the knees, I have to get surgery to place tendons in the sides so I don't end up like my older sister who didn't get the surgery and she is now 24 years old and can't run due to the pain caused by the arthritis, if you never had your knees checked I would suggest doing so to prevent further damage

This answer is a 132-word run-on sentence that doesn't end with a period! Your answer can be improved by breaking this long sentence into shorter sentences, using proper punctuation.

Sorry, I figured people could still understand the answer with out breaking it up. I did use commas, and it's understandable I'm not trying to write a report for school I'm just trying to help with my answer so I didn't think it was neccessary.
