I have EXTREMELY oily hair. I've been looking into dry shampoo for in between freshening ups. Anybody use one? Recommend one?

I'll take other suggestions. But washing my hair 2 or 3 times a day just takes too much time. I bought a can of batiste dry shampoo. It works well but it smells like deodorant spray and one can only lasted through a couple of treatments. Of course it worked quite well.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I went through a stage when I had oily hair and I couldn't use the shampoo for oily hair because my hair was mostly oily by the scalp so when I used the shampoo made for oily hair, then it got dry on the ends. A beauty salon tech gave me an easy and simple trick. Baby powder (I like the cucumber melon because it is fragrant and light). That way I could use a cheaper shampoo and go ahead and condition to make the ends stay healthy. Then when you see that your hair is starting to get a little oily, just brush the powder through your hair, starting at the scalp. Just make sure that you brush it out so you can't see it. It has saved me so many times.

I didn't get this from a site, but from a recommendation from a salon hairstylist.

One reason why you have oily hair is because I am guessing your diet has a lot of oil in it. We are what we eat! You could experiment to see if your diet makes any difference. I know, and this is kind of a funny thing, but some dog foods boast that they give your dog a nice shiny coat! Check the ingredient list. I'm sure the fat content on the labels of this kind of dog food is higher than the ones that don't have this label, such as the dry formulations.

Also, I don't want you to erroneously conclude that I think you are fat. Weight has nothing to do with it, because I am quite skinny, but also can have the same problem. Oils in the diet in general, are absorbed directly from the intestine into the blood stream without further processing. Eating more fiber can hinder this process, because certain fibers, such as bran, can compete and sop up some of the oil in your diet. Something like what they do during oil spills, they throw a lot of straw onto the oil. So another experiment you could do is include more fiber in your diet, such as oatmeal, and see what happens.

And another idea is to exercise, to burn up excess oil before it gets deposited on your hair and skin. Go for a run or swim after eating.

And you could just fast, which is just a more extreme form of not eating oily foods, but worth a try if you can stand it. In fact, I suspect if you were to skip breakfast tomorrow, and then take a shower, and wash your hair, and then not eat for the rest of the day, by evening, I bet you will even notice a slight difference. If then, tomorrow night, you eat a meal having very little oil, such as oatmeal cooked with banana, sprinkled with brown sugar, but no regular milk, just skim milk, you will notice in one day when the diet change works for you. This is treating the problem from the source of the oil, which I believe in your case, is the diet. I assume you are not diabetic. If so, then eliminate the brown sugar.

This is a very interesting tack on the the problem. Some of the things are definitely worth a try.

Thanks for the comment! Maybe someone here can try this experiment and report their experiences here and we can get some data. And if in the affirmative, then maybe my answer will be voted the best! I know this works for me. When I fry my food, not only my hair gets oily, but also my face. You really have to cut all the oil out to notice the difference initially, because there may be a lot of oil already in circulation. But somebody do it now before the question expires!

I have the same irritating problem!
If you're looking for a daily shampoo to control the oil try Head & Shoulders Classic Clean. (It's NOT just for dandruff!)
Or, if you prefer using a treatment occasionally to maintain- try Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo once a week. Should keep it in check!

Wash your hair twice with a non-oily shampoo. Don't use conditioner for awhile. When you do, put it on lightly at night and shampoo off in the morning. Always rinse with apple cider vinegar to cut any residue. Have your hair cut so that it isn't as thick and lays better--ie texturizing. Look at your diet. If all else fails, pull it back off your face like you "greased it" on purpose. However, it's probably more your scalp than your hair so focus on that area and you are bound to see improvement.

use less product, your hair is probably trying to over compensate for the fact that you keep washing out all the good oils, also avoid any moisturizing shampoo's and all conditioners. Also the more stuff you put in your hair the more stuff stays in it making it look greasy. Also wash it once every other day and eventually your hair oil levels will balance out.

Use shampoo made for normal - oily hair. Shampoo regularly as well and don't ever use conditioner. You can also do the trick of using hair dryer everyday for this makes the hair loose its natural oil.

I browsed shampoos that could help. I've read from one site that shampoos with Zinc is good for oily hair. Anti-dandruff shampoos like head & shoulders have this. I agree with that too. Anti dandruff shampoo also leaves the hair dry than usual. Lot of people could attest to that.

Below is the link where you could see other shampoos especially made for hair like yours. Hope that helps! :)

I can save you LOTS of money on your water bill! I recommend Garnier Fructis Fortifying Shampoo + Conditioner. My daughter also has oily hair and she uses this product. I hope this helps!
