I have an out of warranty laptop that just started to suddenly powering off due to excess heat. What do I do?

It has happened twice so far, and the computer wouldn't turn back on until it cooled a little. I have cleaned the fan and areas around it. Its a Acer 5610-2089 running Vista. Are cooling pads good idea or do I need repair?

This can happen on the newest of laptops as well as those that are a few years older. i know one of mine will do it when im using it on my lap in bed, due to the air induction being underneath, is easily blocked by duvet.

Its often not the fan that gets blocked up but the cooling fins(That brass coloured group of metal that you should be able to see where the hot air comes out).

You have a few ways to clean it out.. Blast of air is often good out of those compressed air cans(not cheep for a can of air)... If you have a vacuum cleaner that can blow air that is another option... worst case scenario is to use a vacuum holding it over the vent where the hot air comes out. this should be able to help clean out those fins.

Also be sure the laptop is setting on a hard surface when you use it, and the air vents are not blocked. Do not put it on a pillow or bed coverings.

Try getting a laptop cooling stand. Or maybe just get a book and use it to prop the edge up. This also has the added benefit of tilting the keyboard towards you at a nice angle

I cleaned the cooling fins and started to consistently using a flat surface and did consider getting a fan - all of these good steps, but I think I had a different issue. Some how the minimum and maximum power state in the processor power management section of power options was set between 50% and 100%. After I reset these values to 0% and 75%, the problem resolved. After that change the maximum CPU temperature came down from 80F to 65F!

If you are feeling adventurous, you could open the laptop up and make sure the CPU, Heatsink and Fan are clear of dust. You could also eyeball the contact the HSF is making with the CPU. Your laptop's HSF may be seated incorrectly, or the compound used to attach the heatsink to the CPU has lost it's ability to effectively transfer heat. There are documented cases of too much compound being used in laptops that resulted in them overheating or the HSF slipping out of place from contact with the CPU.

It doesn't look like the assembly manuals for your Acer model are available online with a quick search, but the site below might have some help further down in the comments.
