I have a question about transcribing. When you transcribe something that is not verbatim, do you add all the words like "um" ?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

M$Often for documentaries, they like to know there are ums and ahs to get an idea of the natural flow of the dialogue.
If they don't specify, or don't know, then don't transcribe the ums and ahs.

M$I used to do medical and legal transcription. There was one doctor who used to have bouts of coughing. I used an *cough* in the dictation to indicate that he had a coughing fit.
Later he came to me and told me that I did not have to transcribe "all of the details" but he appreciated my efforts to be accurate. So, basically, unless you are told not to include everything by the organization you work for or the person speaking, you include everything spoken.

Ya, what about constantly saying "you know" inbetween every other word lol for example " it was like, you know, um, really great but you know, I don't think she liked it, um you know." ugh
I think that if a person overly uses phrases like, "you know," then it would be fine to leave them out since they don't contribute to the meaning. However, as someone else pointed out, if you're doing any kind of legal or medical transcribing, you are supposed to transcribe every part of it.
