I have a question about transcribing. When you transcribe something that is not verbatim, do you add all the words like "um" ?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I recently did some research on this exact thing when I was transcribing a video here on MA. What I found is that you generally should not include interjections like "um" or "er" in a transcription because they typically indicate someone is thinking and have no real meaning. However, others such as "ah" and "oh" should be included.

Ya, what about constantly saying "you know" inbetween every other word lol for example " it was like, you know, um, really great but you know, I don't think she liked it, um you know." ugh

I think that if a person overly uses phrases like, "you know," then it would be fine to leave them out since they don't contribute to the meaning. However, as someone else pointed out, if you're doing any kind of legal or medical transcribing, you are supposed to transcribe every part of it.

No way! Anything of that sort is not to be included when transcribing an audio file to a text format.

When I was first learning to therapize, we had to transcribe two fifteen minute sections of a session. EVERYTHING!

It sure taught me to stop talking so much in session!

The client will tell you what they want.

Often for documentaries, they like to know there are ums and ahs to get an idea of the natural flow of the dialogue.

If they don't specify, or don't know, then don't transcribe the ums and ahs.

Yes, You add everything the original speaker says.

I used to do medical and legal transcription. There was one doctor who used to have bouts of coughing. I used an *cough* in the dictation to indicate that he had a coughing fit.

Later he came to me and told me that I did not have to transcribe "all of the details" but he appreciated my efforts to be accurate. So, basically, unless you are told not to include everything by the organization you work for or the person speaking, you include everything spoken.

That's not true for all types of transcriptions, however.
