I have a pesky and persistent Trojan virus on my winlogin.exe file. How can I remove it properly?

Can i delete it and it'll restore properly? I've run all my scans and it's not removing it and it messed up Firefox on it. Would running my scans again through Safe Mode help??

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I have often helped friends deleting viruses, trojans, and malware from their computers. I recommend using Avira AntiVirus (free), and Malwarebytes' Antimalware (free from malwarebytes.org). Safe mode will not help with finding our deleting viruses, but Autoruns.exe (available free from sysinternals.com) will help you identify unwanted startup programs, which are usually triggered at startup. Good luck!

My winning combo is:

AVG Free (anti virus)
SpyBot Search & Destroy (with Tea Timer)
SpywareBlaster

All free, all require manual updating (paid/donation version updates automatically). I've never had a problem on my PC whilst running those programs.

Great advice. I will certainly try that autoruns.exe software. I usually put my computer in safemode though as you mentioned safe mode doesn't help with finding or deleting viruses but will usually help in making sure they don't run until you can run the programs listed above. I usually use AVG free edition, and SpyBot and Tune-up Utilities to keep my computer running. Too many junk files on your computer can make your computer work really sluggish like when it's infected with a virus.

This is just a guess since I do not use PCs. However I had a trojan on my Mac (Google Redirect virus/trojan) and found it helpful to flush the DNS.

After running your virus programs,
flush your DNS...

In windows this is > Start > Run > then enter
ipconfig /flushdns
Enter (command box will pop up and disappear).

To check that it worked
Start > Run "command"
ping jsc.google-analytics.com

Should say "could not find host".
