I have a netbook, can i use the CD/DVD drive of another computer?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Yes. If you share the drive of the other computer over the local network, and you can see that drive from your netbook, then you should be able to access that drive. I would not recommend for watching a movie, but obtaining a file or installing software should work just fine.

Another option is to buy an external USB CD/DVD Drive. They are around $35-40 but I'm sure you could find even cheaper than that.

I would suggest making an ISO of the CD/DVD on the computer with the drive, and then copying the ISO to a USB drive.

OS X and Linux can both create and mount ISO's natively. For Windows I suggest trying Daemon Tools: http://www.daemon-tools.cc/

You can do this by taking the computer apart and remove the CD/DVD drive out of the computer. Then, you need to purchase USB external CD/DVD enclosure.

Tiger Direct has one for $34.95 + shipping

Then, install the PC CD/DVD drive into this enclosure. Finally, you can connect the enclosure via USB to your netbook.
