I have a nephew I think is being neglected and abused...what can I do?

I think this because:
His grades could be better. He is failing on subject. He is 13--weighs 72 pounds small His punishment is:

**3 strappings with a belt by stepdad, that left bruises.
1000 pushups
Staying in the pushup position for an hour or longer.
He's been confined to his room for 6 weeks now; it is stripped of everything. he can come out to FIX HIS OWN DINNER, but must eat with his back to the family room--where mom, 4 year old and sometimes stepdad are happily interacting is away for a year now

My sister says she never hugs him and finds it hard to even touch him. I told her she needs some help she says no. I've begged them to get counseling, no. I've anonymously talked to CPS and they say the kids out of danger with stepdad gone, and while the 'punishments' are unusual--their aim is to keep families together. I've had him for at least half of his life, till she married this guy, and we have a strong bond. He's a good kid at heart. I think he's not gettting good grades because its the ONLY thing she repeatedly says she wants from him; and since he gets nothing else from her---he's withholding.

What can I do?

I think you need to be more insistent with CPS. If necessary consult a lawyer specializing in family law to help you with the issue.
To find a lawyer in your area you can start with www.findlaw.com

Thank you, DB, I did call again...I think a lawyer would be a good idea. We are across state lines, so I'd need to find one in her state.

It (the system) works differently when someone in authority i.e. the mental health ppl, the children's advocate service etc., does the reporting of child abuse. This sure seems like that is what this is.

Call CPS again- whoever you spoke to last time was wrong/misinformed. The way he is being treated is wrong, and they would be able to help you help him. Just make sure you talk to the right person. Good luck. I hope you and your nephew come out alright.

I think you are right. I need to go higher. I did read something interesting last night about law in their state. At 14 they DO ask the child what he/she wants. So....

Please try again with CPS. Try to be there for your nephew. Talk to him and be a part of his life. Try to be his positive thing. He needs someone to be positive for.

Thanks, I will try cps again and again. I do stay in his life and I know he knows I love him. He also has an uncle who thinks he sets the moon, so he does have some positives in his life. Not enough though.

I agree with dumblonde. You might need to insist on talking to a supervisor, or writing a letter to the department head. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.
