I have a computer that has Windows Vista. Should I upgrade to Windows 7 and if so why?

The computer I have was new in November 2009 and I am able to upgrade to Windows 7 for free. I am wondering whether to upgrade or not? and if so, why or why not?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

The first thing you need to ask yourself is "Do I have any problems with Vista?"

If not, you might as well keep it unless you get to upgrade for free. I use Vista still and have never had 1 problem. I run all kinds of games and try out software that I review. I install and uninstall various things each week.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it (unless it's free!)

In a nutshell, yes. Not necessarily right this moment, but certainly while your free upgrade is valid. MS operating systems are a fickle thing. Which OS you run should be determined by what you're using the machine for. For example my girlfriend uses her pc mainly for internet surfing, email, and web development. Once MS fixed a few quirks in W7 that effected processes used in these normal tasks, I upgraded her system. For her use, compared to Vista, its faster, the UI is friendlier, and...till this point at least... it works like it should (something Vista has troubles claiming.

Whereas I still run XP on my primary work computer because its main function is music production, and XP service pack 2 was the first MS OS that didn't consistently crash and that the manufacturers of my software tools developed rock solid drivers.

For typical usage (internet, gaming, torrents, office, etc), I would switch to W7. Its faster, more secure than previous systems, and most importantly is probably going to become the next 'XP'... ie, it will be supported far better than the likes of 2K, Vista, etc...

Rather than reiterate a more cohesive/semi-geeky arguement (I've been awake for 20 hours, me no thinky so well no more)... here are some articles that lay out the pro/con fairly well.

Not all PC manufacturers though participate in this program, check first for details before buying.
