I have a cell phone. I want to keep the cellphone and number. Is there a cheap plan I can sign up to?

I don't want to upgrade the phone. I don't want to lose the number. I just want to get a new plan. I need at least 500 anytime minutes. Or a "faves" option.

Can I get one cheaper than the $40 anytime plan from T-Mobile - my current provider?
Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Generally discounts only come with a 2 year contract, whether or not you provide the phone. Providing the phone might allow you to go month-to-month instead of requiring a 2-year contract if you buy a new phone at a subsidized price.

I am not aware of any current plans that offer what you've after for what you're willing to pay. Prepaid T-Mobile might still be better, even with 500 minutes a month of usage, considering you wouldn't also be paying all the taxes and surcharges and whatnot. It would also mean you could keep using your existing phone.

You need to talk to your provider about this, and then look into other providers. Yes, you can keep the same number, and it was not always like that before. Every service provider is different. There are more providers than T-Mobile. Look at AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and Alltell.

Here you can compare the various cell phone plans:

I wouldn't consider alltel. Verizon is in the process of buying alltel and no one is quite sure what will happen with that transition. Verizon will of course be required to honor existing alltel contracts through their expiration, but after that, you could be in the same situation you are now.

T-mobile is known for their cheapness as far as monthly palns go, but from your question it sounds like you are interested only in a basic plan and a basic phone. In that case, I would recommend a pre-paid company such as virgin mobile. You will have to get a new phone, but a basic phone from them starts at $10. 1000 minutes from them costs only $50 which would break down to just over half what you are paying now per month, and these minutes would not expire every month. You will be able to keep your number when you switch.

Oh, and if anyone's looking for a super cheap phone, with very limited minutes, go with www.consumercellular.com. We used to be with them for our "emergency" phones. If you STAY IN YOUR 80 MINUTES (very important - cause extra minutes are damn expensive), they are cheaper and easier to use, IMHO, than a prepaid phone, where your minutes expire, and you're tempted to use them.

Thanks for the answers everyone. Much appreciated. To clarify, I need at least 500 minutes or a "favorites" plan.

Basically, I'm trying to see if, by "PROVIDING THE PHONE"... I'm hoping I can get into a cheaper plan - i.e. since supposedly the cost of your cell phone includes payment for the cost of the phone itself. (My wife loves her hot pink RAZR and sees no reason to give it up.)

When I search individual sites, and big dealers like wirefly.com, the best I can find is $40 plans. Sure, there are a few $29 and $35 plans out there, but they all have restrictions that will quickly make them $50 or $60 plans with my wife's typical usage each month. And, they all involve getting new phones. So, right now, the $40 Verizon my faves plan, with 300 minutes sounds the best. That's my bogey.

Be prepared to bargain when you call customer service. Every carrier is prepared to offer some concessions to keep customers, especially if your term plan is expired. If your term plan is not expired, you have less leverage, but still have some power. They will usually offer free add-ons instead like voice mail, SMS buckets, long distance discounts, etc, stuff that costs them nothing, or nearly. Just stick to your guns and ask to have your call escalated to a team leader or management if they don't budge. T-Mobile is not known for being a leader, so I agree with looking at other carriers in detail before making this call. That way, when they offer you something, you can counter with what the competition is offering you. Go ahead, be their worst nightmare! An informed consumer!
