I forgot my wife's birthday card. How can i prevent this from happening again?

Yes. let technology remind you. For example, I use google calendar to set up messages to come to my email for important dates and events.
Also, I can set up my phone's calendar to send me a message about events and dates.
So if you have something set up like that, then not having a birthday card is your fault.
