I fell on my hand last night in a parking lot. It only really hurts when I move it. Is it broken or just sore? How long will it hurt for?

18-year-old male.

Chances are it is a sprain or strain, but get it checked out ASAP. If it is a break and it heals poorly you could end up causing yourself a ton of grief. It may hurt for a week or two but if the worst case scenario is true this will hurt indefinitely.

You may want to check this out. An expert was asked roughly the same question, his answer, get an XRay

Pay particular attention to the following
persistent pain
swelling near the wrist
changes in finger movement
numbness

These can be indicators of a break. http://arthritis.about.com/od/wrist/a/wristfractures.htm

I had a broken thumb that I never fixed, a school nurse thought it was not broken.

If I want it fixed now they have to re-break it. It has been a bit sore on and off for 20 years.

Well you should put ice on it and drink pain relievers. If this still occurs 3 days or more you need to go make an appointment with your doctor because no matter what anyone say on this site they don't know whats really going on with your hand because they can't identify it visually. In addition, most of these people don't have any medical backgrounds so they can tell you anything and your hand might get worse. I say go to the doctor and let them check it out =) Don't leave it alone the pain occurs for several days it can lead to serious damage.

I do really feel upset when people giving advice on such cases without medical background or degree.
And the worst that they feel so confident about their statements becouse the lack of the mentioned above.

By profession i can tell you that -With your information and background you provided no one can tell what is your condition.

I was gonna tell him to hit his knee with a ball peen hammer so that his hand didn't hurt as much....or at least so that he would forget about his hand hurting....Hehe. Maybe I will just go to medical school instead...

Hope your hand feel better!

Chances are it is not broken. Symptoms normally include bruising, swelling, pain, and bleeding in the injured part of the hand, which can result from one or more broken bones. If the hand looks misshapen, than it is likely broken.

Also, if you have broken the skin, you may need a tetanus shot.

I agree with cheapgamer. Another possibility is that it's jammed. I jammed my wrist years ago and couldn't really move it either. I had to use a brace for it until it healed up, which took about a week or two. Unfortunately, it was my right hand, so I couldn't even write with it. When I tried to move it or use my fingers, I got a swelling stabbing pain that made the joint feel kind of hot, if you know what that means.

How is your hand today?

If it isn't feeling better by Monday, you should go see a doctor. Giving it a couple of days for the swelling to go away probably isn't unreasonable, as long as it isn't too painful, but if it doesn't improved markedly, give yourself a break (sorry!) and see someone who can tell you if it is broken or not.

Good luck!

Disclaimer: I am not in the medical profession. I am somebodies' mother and this is what I would tell those sombodies if they called home and told me about this.

I suggest you go to a physician. Last time I fell on my hand, my thumb was all swollen and I thought it was broke.

I remained like that for almost a few weeks.

You NEED to see a doctor, bones can take extraordinary forces in some ways but if you stress them in an awkward way or just right they'll snap like twigs. I broke my hand in just such an unlucky way and didn't even realise it was broken since it didn't hurt TOO bad and I was able to move everything.

In actuality when my mother finally dragged me to get it xrayed at 12 in the morning the doctor came out and asked me, seriously, if a HORSE had stepped on my hand. It never healed completely right and to this day my handwriting is nowhere near as good as it was before then and it's painful to write more than a paragraph of two.

Don't take the chance man, if it doesn't get set right and it is broken it'll suck a LOT more than paying for the xray. Just don't go to the hospital, they'll make you wait forever. Try an urgent-care or your primary care physician.

You can check it yourself. It is very simple.

1. If it has swollen a lot and you can hardly move a finger, then be almost sure that it is broken or suffered a hairline crack or fracture. It broken, it should swell like hell.

2. If it has not swollen much or at all and you can move it with difficulty (with pain of course), then it might be a mere sprain.

In any case, do not try to rub or massage it with any ointment. Try some cold compress with ice and use some pain-killer sprays (I repeat, don't rub it) to reduce the pain as first-aid and rush to the doctor.

Hope it is fine. Thanks
