I don't want Dogmeat to die in Fallout 3!! How do I heal him in combat?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

He actually has a lot of health and can take quite a beating, but in the heat of battle it's sometimes inevitable that he will die. He's kind of annoying because he initiates combat by himself and will even open doors to attack things. Tell him to Wait behind so that you can get the jump on enemies first.
If you don't mind using cheats and you're playing on PC, there are cheats to make invincible or to respawn him if he dies.
To make him invulnerable, enter console command setessential 6a772 1
A good source of information is the Fallout 3 Wiki at http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Dogmeat_(Fallout_3)

M$Healing Dogmeat requires that you talk to him like any other NPC. Initiate a conversation and go down to the option that says "give dogmeat a stimpack" or something similar. You'll heal him that way. But in combat, that means you need to be right on top of him in order to initiate the healing, so stay close to him in order to keep him alive.
The best way to protect Dogmeat is to try to keep an eye on him. He'll sometimes run off to attack things, so you'll want to make sure he's behind you as much as possible. When you're approaching a fight, you can give him the "wait" instruction so that he'll stay back, and that way you can weaken your enemies or thin them out before utilizing Dogmeat. Otherwise, focus on whatever enemy is engaging Dogmeat and help him to defeat it as fast as possible.

Oh Pumkin - you are so wise and sage!! Thank you so much for the advice (and the code!! LOL!!) I appreciate it - but say, how do you give him a Stimpack? Do I do it to myself and then it goes over to him as well?
Thanks so much for your help - and Iagree - at times, he can be annoying. I got into a brawl with a Super-Mutant Brute the other day and Dogmeat started it. Dammit.
Thanx again!
