I bought some ginger and it is sprouting. I want to plant it. How do I care for it?
I normally grate the ginger root and use it for cooking oriental dishes. But it seems a shame to use it, maybe it would flower nicely?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I tried growing it once, and it made a pretty, vining plant. It survived all summer in a pot outside, but won't overwinter where the temperatures go below freezing. You will need a fairly large pot, some good potting soil and warm temperatures for it to grow. It took more room than I thought, so it got a little crowded. There will be sprouts that come up around the parent plant and these are what grow the ginger root.
I researched before planting it, but it still wasn't what I expected.

Keep in mind there are different plants called ginger. The kind used as a seasoning is not a vining plant but grows tall, straight leaves.
