I use Mahalo Answers just for fun, anybody else? Or do you answer for the bucks?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I like the idea of a community of people that find incentive and reward in giving well researched and honest guidance and answers to people who want to know something. I don't think I'll ever answer enough questions to make the money important. I like research, I like helping people, and most of all I like an online community of non-spamming, intelligent, non-hostile people.

I'm not looking for anything but helping random folks.

I do MA to contribute to the community and for being on the ground floor of something different (at least, a different attitude).

I pretty much just do it for fun, because it's a way to showcase my knowledge and expertise, because I learn more than I teach, and because I'm a chronic early-adopter. What little money I may get isn't a concern.

Marking me unhelpful is pretty low, considering that it's an opinion question, I answered it, and Jason has already said he's aware of the issue and will be dealing with people who keep doing it.

I go to MA to share my knowledge, share my opinion, and learn something as well. There are a lot of interesting questions presented that I also gain knowledge by just viewing them. The money is not much of an incentive for me to answer a question but I use my M$ if i want to get quality answers for a question I want to ask. Finally, I would want to say that I love the community. It's clean, entertaining and helpful. I know it's still on its early stages of development and I'm just glad to be a part of it.

It's nice to get a reward for answering a question well, but I don't think it matters weather it is mahalo $ or something else. It takes a lot of question answering (= a lot of time) to get actual money out of this service, making it a very small rate of return.
I can't see me using the m$ for anything other than asking more questions. Maybe that's how the system was meant to built!

It depends very much on the question. Sometimes I do it for the fun, sometimes for the money and sometimes for the challenge. I never do it ONLY for the money, though. I comment mostly for fun or when I like an answer.

It varies a lot.

Sometimes I'm just answering for fun.

Sometimes to help someone out.

Other times because I think I've got something worthwhile to say or I'm interested in finding out the answer myself.

The M$ are nice, but mostly the tips are far too low to just answer for the money. But sure if there's a $10 question that I think I can do a good job on, and won't take all day to answer, the money will be an incentive.

If the tip level were a lot higher I might consider MA a potential serious source of income, but not for a buck or three, given the amount of time it takes to write a good answer.

There are other sites where people are giving out professional advice for as much as $200 a pop. (Lawyers and doctors giving an opinion, math teachers explaining how to solve a problem etc.)

It's just for fun, but I believe the questions for the M$ are certainly worth the challenge, and make you want to answer better when you can, as you know someone had to pay for their answer.

Like Mr. Gunn I could say I'm a chronic-early adopter as well. I tend to frequent sites like this for a bit of brand building. I have a site, I don't like to spam people with it, but if people start to associate "Hey, I like what this guy is saying" with my name, it's not hard to find me. I try very, very hard to build up recognition solely on quality of content. It's certainly longer and slower and I don't think I'll ever make a living at it, but that's why I have a full time job :).
