I am sick and tired for spending time typing out answers, hitting "submit," and seeing and "error" message. Fix your site Mahalo!

In your email mention..
1. When the Problem happened.
2. What you were doing when you experienced the problem.
3. What type of browser and connection you are using.
4. Do you have a screenshot or video of bug? They help a lot!
Thanks, as always, for your patience, the more people who report an issue, the more information we gain about the bug and the easier it becomes to fix.

M$I'd just like to add that I have never experienced any problems like the one you mention. So that would lead me to believe it might be specific to your OS/Browser combination. So I would include that information in a bug report.
(I'm using firefox on a macbook)

M$@dhawk - While Mahalo has raised a great deal of money you have to keep in mind several things, Jason has made a point that the money raised is to insure there is capital to keep the site running for at LEAST 3 years, which means a good chunk of the money you mention can't be touched right now because the investors have given this money under the assumption that it will be used to keep things going for that length of time. You also have to consider the relative small number of employees that run a site like this... you can see new sites/products from companies like Google that won't have problems because there are hundreds of thousands of man hours dumped into it. Meanwhile, a site like Mahalo only has a few developers that can only put in so much time to make things work, so when bugs are found it takes time to fix them. Since Mahalo is trying to keep things fresh and add new features there will naturally be small issues (like the one you are seeing) because new features can cause things that use to work just fine to crap out... that is the joy of programming and technology in general :)
Don't let this issue discourage you from using the service, just let Mahalo know of your problem and they will be sure to look into it!!
if i have spent a lot of time on writing anything important to me, i copy and paste into a temporary text document. you wouldn't believe how many times i've had something occur... but i really haven't had that problem on mahalo. and i love that i can come back to a task page after a browser crash and it still has the information i put even though i hadn't submitted it yet... a real plus for me.
so yes, i seriously copy and paste... or at least copy till i make sure it has gone through. i really don't like trying to redo my work.
No I usually don't copy it because it usually works. Only if it is stalling and it looks like it might not go though, then I do a quick copy. I don't know, if they have that much money to spare, maybe they could put a little more towards fixing the bugs.
seriously? Do you copy every email or tweet you write before you submit it? Submitting an anwer should be a "new feature" for a QnA service that has been out for more than 8 months. Submitting a question is fundamental to the service rather than a "new features." Again, it is hard to live with this from a company that has raised $20M. Maybe I'm not being fair but its just my persepctive.

M$i did that too before for short answers... worked for me... also using firefox
Naaahh I think @dhawk is right... it happen to me too. Normally when it takes more time to write on a long answer ... I go to the kitchen a come back after 15 minutes or more... I submit and.... Bang! It disappear into a blank browser page, I touch back the browser button... and guess what? Empty box and text lost. I´m using explorer 7 under Win Vista. Gates playing on us again? or Mahalo´s gremlins are not sorted out yet?
But, it is not a problem unique to Mahalo.
After many time losing posts on Craigslist due to timeouts or random glitches, I alway select all / copy before hitting the submit button. In longer posts, I will paste into Notepad.
Quick insurance policy for what could have been 5, 10, or more minutes of work.
Using a text or e-mail editor as a staging ground becomes almost mandatory with the constant changes in technology on web sites:
- no working back button for most forms
- captcha images that timeout immediately from a pre-fetch (Chrome)
- IE8 incompatibility mode
- putting everything in a cookie or session tag, then screwing it up
- java input fields that prohibit copy/paste (love that!)
- web architects who keep changing login locations so password managers can't keep up
Persistence and anti-automation are enemies.
You have to support persistence to provide a better experience for your human users.
But, at the same time, you have to defeat as many spiders and spambots as possible...to provide a better experience for your human users.
.......almost got me there, Mahalo. I'm not logged in again. Why? Who knows? But I would have lost this post.

M$Yes, when I press "Submit", if I am not logged in, then I get a 502 Bad Gateway error. However, this problem can be fixed. Clicking the back buttion will cause my answer to reappear. I then log in using the login button and paste my answer back into the box when I return to the page.
I usually don't have problems when I am logged in.

M$You don't understand. Mahalo realizes that their website is broken. They are working around the clock to fix it. They can only debug and test things so fast. Sure, when you discover a bug, it should be reported so that they are aware of it. But going on and on about the same problems that they've known about for months isn't going to fix anything.
Mahalo is a very complex website. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen this complex of a website that doesn't require Flash. There are going to be problems. If you just calm down and wait, they will be able to fix them eventually.
Patience is a virtue.
>Ranting about it will do no good.
I disagree. If all we post are rah-rah comments about how great things are, the folks at Mahalo will not get a true sense of the problems and frustrations.
Posting nothing but niceities is more unhelpful than posting nothing at all.
Mahalo understands (or should) that their content is provided primarily by non-employees via their proprietary web interface. If it breaks, their revenue and popularity drop.
If users are unhappy, they will devote less time, or even leave. As with any real-world product, unhappy customers will spread ill-will more efficiently than good will. It's the nature of human trust...we are more likely to be cautious when warned of problems. If somebody paints pretty pictures, we always take it with a grain of salt...and immediatlely search for the complaints.
The persona of an online entity revolves around how that entity treats their suppliers and consumers. Potential and existing consumers (and suppliers) will evaluate what material is available and analyze how problems are resolved. They want to see how hard or easy it is to deal with problems.
If Mahalo had no complaints, how can a potential new user evaluate the service? How would they know if problems are new? Being resolved? Permanent and ignored?
Complaints are more than helpful. They are a necessary component to evaluating or validating a web site's ability to evolve.
This site has had its bugs, when the new version of Mahalo came out i couldn't sign up and was being signed in as random users (with no capital thank god, but I had and could change their email addresses, eek identity theft). It got fixed in two days so its not much of a problem.
The submit button generally works though, and I am not sure this problem comes from the code itself. I have taken a look at the code and the submit button is very standard.
The problem may come from a lack of servers / not powerful enough servers for the amount of people online. I have noticed random slowdowns of the site and believe it is all related.
Cheers!

M$As for copying one's answers before submitting ... HA! One workaround is to just submit then go back and edit. At least you won't lose all that you've written.
