I am organizing a tournament and need to to set up the brackets...Pound for pound what land animal is the best fighter in the world?

Sea animals are disqualified, I don't want to see anyone stumping for sharks.
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

'Pound for pound' how about Army Ants. Although they are technically insects and could be stomped on in reality - if you translated them up in size they're mean buggers.

Also, if we're going with the 'pound for pound' idea to the extreme - how about a Preying Mantis - these guys are carnivores and really amazing predators.

...the Mantis' head spins 360 degrees, that's a crazy predator.

I like the praying mantis thought, a 400 lb version would be quite dangerous.

A mean, rabid, vengeful berserk elephant.
12,000 lbs. What can compete with that?

I would have to go with the badger. I have had a couple of dogs torn apart by these things. They are small, but have no fear and are vicious when they fight. I've seen one take on a pack of 3 dogs and come out on top. I've also heard of them taking on bears...

You truly have to beware though...when they come in packs...

A Kodiak Bear will mess you up, man. I wouldn't want to fight one. Look at the claws!

They are highly intelligent. Their eyesight is comparable to humans. Their sense of smell is better than a dog's! In essence, if you are another animal, a Kodiak Bear will find you and kill you.

To quote Stephen Colbert: "They are remorseless killing machines."

That would be the Pen Tailed Tree Shrew. Pound for pound, you said, but this shrew is only about 1.8 ounces, sometimes less. You never see a grizzly bear fighting and eating something bigger than it is. Pen Tailed Tree Shrews have been known to eat Tree Geckos.
Overall strength of an animal is largely based on its mass, or weight. That's why a hippo is so dangerous. But when you say pound for pound, then the strength is based on its metabolism. A tiny predator has to have a fast metabolism, and that means it has more energy and thus strength by weight.

The correct answer is: C.K.

Just give me a few months to pork up to that weight and I'll be good to go.

Crocodile! Smart enough to go for the throat and tough skin to prevent retaliation.

A tiger can weigh up to 660lb, a lion up to 550lb, a jaguar up to 300lb, and a cheetah up to 160lb.
If it is Pound for pound, 2 cheetahs can easily take on jaguar and 3 to 4 cheetahs can easily win over a tiger or a lion. (But cheetahs don't hunt in groups!)
So my vote is for a cheetah!

Okay, I think one of your best resources for this would be a program titled "Animal Face-Off". They did about 12 episodes where animals were pitted against each other to see which was the best fighters.

Saltwater Crocodile vs. Great White Shark (Winner: Shark)
White Rhinoceros vs. African Elephant (Winner: Elephant )
Asiatic Lion vs. Bengal Tiger (Winner: Lion)
Hippopotamus vs. Bull Shark (Winner: Hippopotamus)
Gray Wolf vs. Cougar (Winner: Cougar)
Polar Bear vs. Walrus (Winner: Walrus )
Siberian Tiger vs. Grizzly Bear (Winner: Bear)
African Lion vs. Nile Crocodile (Winner: Crocodile)
Anaconda vs. Jaguar (Winner: Anaconda )
Gorilla vs. Leopard (Winner: Gorilla )
American Alligator vs. American Black Bear (Winner: Bear)

That said, the world's deadliest animal happens to be the hippopotamus. They kill more people every year than anyone else. They are big, tough, and have very strong jaws.

A Polar Bear. For the same reasons as any other bear, but they're armed with the power of cute.

Godless killing machine, wrapped in adorable package that you can't help but go, "AWW! I wanna hug youuuuu!"

Seriously, who can resist this?
