I am going to a weekend long gathering, out of town. We all bring different foods to share. I normally bake, but feel cheap. What to bring?

Tip for best answer: M$0.37
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I am wondering what it is about baking that makes you feel "cheap." It is lovely to have home baked goodies at a weekend long trip. If you typically have been bringing baked goods to these gatherings, it might be that everyone "expects" you to bring treats. Rather than start doing something new, make a few phone calls to people attending the gathering, and ask them for an honest appraisal of your typical offerings.
You might find that people don't bring goodies because you always do. Who knows, you might disappoint everyone if you don't bring your famous and delicious desserts!
With that said, if you really feel like doing something new, a good and quick appetizer is bruschetta. You will thinly slice a loaf of good, crusty french bread. Lay the bread slices out on a cookie sheet. Then, choose a topping that sounds good:
1. Top with a slice each of brie and tomato. Add a piece of fresh basil if you feel like it.
2. Put sliced olives and a few gratings of mozarella, then drizzle with a small bit of olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
3. Grate zucchini and cheese together and place a nice bit on each slice of bread.
4. Make up your own creation. The possibilities are endless!
Place cookie sheet with prepared bruschetta in an oven. Broil until cheese toppings are melting or (if no cheese used) look good enough to eat! Serve immediately.
I hope your weekend is wonderful!

As this is a weekend long event, and I am coming from out of town, I need some durable things, some to present for each meal.

Will you have access to a grocery store? How are you traveling? If going by car, you might consider bringing a few bottles of wine. If you are flying, forget the wine unless you can go to a grocery store near your gathering place.
I can see your dilemma here. I keep thinking of baked goods- they travel well and people like them . You could bake something not quite dessert. For instance, zucchini or banana bread. Great for breakfast, and you can buy it if time is short. You can also freeze it so it will travel better. Other ideas: Hot cocoa mix; canned nuts; don't know if any of this helps, but good luck!
