I am getting a cold, I think. What is the best way to head it off?

I have to take the Microsoft 70-270 on Friday, and I am doing my last-minute cramming. I'd like to be as healthy as possible to study and take the test. Any proven remedies out there to minimize the symptoms? Thanks!

this is what works for me, make a tea with hot water, crushed garlic(as much as you can handle), and the juice from a whole lemon. Sip a couple of these a day. The second thing is I take a large amount of Cayenne pepper. The pepper can be taken one of two ways, the cayenne bomb, which is stirring in a teaspoon of cayenne in a glass of water and down the hatch. Not a great taste and the first time I did the cayenne bomb I thought I was going to vomit. The second way of taking the pepper is to mix it in with your food, what I found the best is to mix it with some mashed potatoes. so, in re-cap, two tea a day and two doses of pepper a day. For me when I feel a cold coming on and follow these steps by the second day it is gone. try it,, see if it works for you.

Hmm. This is definitely interesting, but I'm not sure I have the balls to do it. :D

awesome, I am happy for your health. You know I take in cayenne pepper at least 3 times a week and I cook with garlic all the time and I hardly ever get sick, and if I do it is minor stuff. the simple things are often times the best.

it sounds worse than it is,, the tea is actually a nice drink and the pepper mixed in with your food is not bad at all,, it is the cayenne bomb that is nasty!! :)

Chicken Soup!
"Irwin Ziment, M.D., pulmonary specialist and professor at the UCLA School for Medicine, says chicken soup contains drug-like agents similar to those in modern cold medicines. For example, an amino acid released from chicken during cooking chemically resembles the drug acetylcysteine, prescribed for bronchitis and other respiratory problems. Spices that are often added to chicken soup, such as garlic and pepper (all ancient treatments for respiratory diseases), work the same way as modern cough medicines, thinning mucus and making breathing easier."

The idea is also supported on these sites:
http://www.healthbulletin.org/colds_flu/colds2.htm
http://www.cbc.ca/consumers/market/files/food/chickensoup/

If it is in your throat, use a humidifier or vaporizer especially at night. It will help prevent your throat from drying out and getting worse. I swear by this.

The acetylcysteine thing is a bit speculative, but spicy chicken soup definitely works, whatever the cause!

OMG seriously?! That is amazing.
The garlic thing I had heard though. They say it's a natural antibiotic/immune booster.

Sleep as much as possible, drink lots of water and take lots of vitamin C.
Whenever I start getting cold that's what I do. Especially sleep. I rest all day if I can and then the cold just lasts about a day. Rest boosts your immune system and helps you fight off the cold which is about all you can do because it's a viral infection.

Also, zinc lozenges help too, supposedly. But honestly the only thing I give faith that works is to sleep a lot. Good luck on your test!
For symptoms on test day. Take Dayquil and bring tissues!

Make sure you drink lots of water, or even better, orange juice. Also, make sure you wash your hands constantly so that it doesn't spread fast. Also, if you don't think about the fact that you are sick and are distracted with other things then you forget that you feel bad and start to feel better.

Try making little exercise at the end of the day. At night keep your body naturally warm (don't sleep naked or without covering or body) if you're sweating, let it be (your body warm up and then naturally cools down). if in the morning you still feeling little fever, then follow with what dumblonde said, otherwise see a doctor.

Make sure you are drinking lots of fluids. Orange juice is the best when you think you are getting sick because it gives you a lot of vitamin C. Getting enough sleep is also very important. If you don't sleep then your body will be tired and not able to fight off the infection. Hope this helps :D

Best that works for me is to take some zinc-based product like Cold-eze, but only if you take it just as you start to feel symptoms. You'll find that your cold last less time and is less severe.

If the symptoms are already bad, then take any cold and fl remedy that is non-drowsy.

Don't focus on just one remedy, try to cover all your bases:

1. Take echinacea, and Vitamin C. That Airborne product also seems to work really well for me, but I usually take additional echinacea on top of it.

2. Plenty of sleep. A reccent study found that people who slept less were more likely to catch a cold:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/12/AR2009011202090.html

3. Soup! Along with lots of water and liquids to help flush out your system. I'd recommend having a glass of cranberry or pomegranate juice (full of antioxidants) once or twice a day. As for soup: something with thin broth, nothing thick and creamy like chowder. Chicken noodle is the stereotype, but if you like Vietnamese / Asian food I'd recommend a nice hot bowl of Phở. It tastes great and adding the spice to it really helps clear your nose.

4. If you start to feel congested on your test day, take a steaming hot shower - it will temporarily unclog and relieve your sinuses.

5. Finally, if you do get sick...well, take medicine. :)

1) Keep your hydrated - drink lots of fluids.
2) Ample rest would help, but since you are cramming for the exams, you might not get enough of it.
3) Your best bet is to boost your immune system. You can do that by taking Echinacea. This is less known ( but becoming increasingly popular ) way to help your body fight common colds the natural way.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echinacea

You can get Echinacea is various brands - I would recommend the Nutrilite brand - its totally organic, 3 times more potent than its closest competitor, distributed by a known health and nutrition industry leader Amway Global. However if you are not a registered client, you will not be able to get it before Friday. Go down to the nearest grocery store and look up the shelves for Echinacea - you might get another brand called Shaklee Defend & Resist Complex. Try GNC - you might get it there. If you go to the following link, you will know why I would recommend Nutrilite.

I hope you get better and good luck with you certification. If you have further questions or need clarifications or getting the recommended product, you can contact me directly.

Ugh I hate echinacea. All the pills I've tried have given me nausea.
