I am buying two converter boxes for my grandmother. What is the best digital converter box available? Thanks.

(Best Buy's Insignia model is exactly the same.)
But, definitely, you'll need to get an appropriate antenna for your situation. Here's a great site for figuring that out. http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx
(For us, rabbit ears work upstairs. Downstairs, we'll need a better solution.)
Please note, set-up can be odd. But, once you're done, you're done.
(BTW, I can't disagree with any of Hartwell's comments or commentary. I'm guessing that there will be a whole slew of products coming out _after_ the cards are done and the switch is made. And that, and a whole slew of people being fed up with their experience, and selling their new converter boxes on Craiglist and eBay as they stream to cable and satellite.)
Personal experience.

M$one thing you'll probably want to do is talk to her about the default "power down" behavior. to qualify for the $40.00 coupon program, the manufacturers had to meet a list of requirements. one of those requirements was that the box be set by default to power down after 2 hours of inactivity.
sounds like a good idea, right? except that most people are going to either use the remote for their tv set to change volume OR never change the volume when they are watching. that means, there will be times when the box gets left on the same channel for two hours, and then just shuts itself off.
THANKS, ENERGYSTAR! Fortunately, this "feature" can be defeated by surfing through the menu system and changing the inactivity power off behavior to a longer time or disable the feature completely.
To answer your question: we got good results from the magnavox box TB100MW9 from wal*mart. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8283870
we also got a converter from Radio Shack DTX9950
Catalog #: 15-150 http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3150939
Also: let me express my anger at the 40.00 coupon program. If it were not for this program, all these boxen would cost about 12 dollars each. By giving away a $40.00 coupon, the government guaranteed the price would be over $40.00.
Also, you get to pay state sales tax on the total price. So, take the wal*mart price: $49.87 ($9.87 after $40.00 coupon.) WRONG. $49.87 price + $3.00 sales tax - $40.00 coupon = $12.87. $9.87+ tax would be $10.47. (at my 6% state sales tax YMMV)
I guess we are blessed to be able to complain about such mundane details!
