I would like to have a USAS-12 Full Auto 12 gauge Assault Shotgun as my defense against the zombie masses. With a 20 round drum of 12 gauge shells I should have enough stopping power for an escape plan to come together.
I don't think the zombies stand a chance against me with this weapon.

Anything that requires preparation or certainly RELOADING is less than ideal during a zombie attack. You've got to figure that this is a marathron, not a sprint...You're going to need to kill HUNDREDS of zombies over the course of hours or even days in order to survive.
So I'd probably go with something that requires no fuel at all, like a flaming samurai sword (provided I had time to figure out how to use the thing). Failing that, I'd go with something that would run for a while, like a chainsaw or even a flamethrower. (Dual-wielding flamethrowers against a bunch of zombies, in addition to being smart strategy, also has the benefit of looking totally sweet. Has anyone ever done that in a movie?)

They're already dead, so if you shoot them with a shotgun they still keep moving around, only looking for like hamburger, and if you use a chainsaw, then now you've got arms and legs each scratching and flailing and trying to get at you...
But a flam thrower gets rid of the things once and for all.
Aqua Regia works good too, but the problem is it hangs around and burns holes in the carpet or the floor or the pavement long after it's done it's job on the zombie.

You've got to consider what kind of zombie is coming after you, whether it be classic reincarnated dead that never ever fall but move slow, sometimes dragging themselves by one arm
or the new fast-zombie that will perish from a few shots to the chest or one good one in the head.
In either case, bulletted guns will eventually run out, and you still have thousands of flesh-eaters still charging or lurching after you. This is ultimately not a good idea.
Hand held melee weapons such as axes and swords are useful if you have a few days to rest in between, or else you're meat there too. Ever spent a few hours chopping wood? Now double the pace.
Flamethrowers are ineffective. Period. I haven't seen a single movie where setting a zombie on fire has stopped the zombie, usually it's just enraged them. Plus, it might be okay if you could take them one at a time, but 50 all at once? You're gone!
Electricity may or may not be effective, depending on the type of zombie.
So your only real 100% sure foolproof savior from the zombie apocolypse is.......
a boring old plain run of the mill wall.
Getting something between you and the zombie, and making sure that it stays between you and the zombie. The best offense is a good defense.
Stock the multiple walls between you and the zombie with enough food to wait them out.
Living Zombies WILL eventually die of dehydration, the body will stop moving after it's been exposed to enough heat. If dead, you can only hope the spell that reanimated them wears off. Because people keep dieing, the reanimated zombies are unstoppable. You can't ultra-kill something, and the sheer numbers make any kind of offense impossible. There was one zombie movie where they nuked them at the end, the spell or chemical that reanimated them got into the rainwater and spread even further.
After a few months, maybe a year, depending on how many new zombies are made by people peeking out of their bunkers, the world will hopefully be safe and you can repopulate at will.

Why? Komodo Dragons eat corpses. They are deadly predators, swift, intelligent and immune to toxic levels of biological substances that can down live prey as fast as any biological weapon today. I say immune because their saliva alone contains over 50 of these toxins, some that are not even fully identified. So the chances of a Komodo Dragon contracting the zombie disease is significantly less than the chances of a zombie invasion in the first place.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7CQInAXoqY
Zombies can't swim, but if somehow they survived the carrion eaters of the sea AND my Dragon Army, I'd have as my main backup an electromagnetic railgun. Pay particular attention to the railguns ability to lay down a swath of small penetrating projectiles over a large area. Done.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OqlTXwLG40
http://library.witpress.com/pages/PaperInfo.asp?PaperID=17678
The field artillery version of that weapon (sorry I couldn't find the link to the show that demo'd it) can fire 1000 rounds per second if I recall, can be programmed with target size, movement and other data so that it operates independently and lay cover fire down over a very large area.
If all else failed I'd fire up my emergency hot air balloon and float over to the Himalaya's and hope my theory of cold weather freezing the corpses is accurate. Which would be easy to verify since the trail to Everest is littered with frozen corpses. Unless the zombie infestation is caused by supernatural means instead of disease. Then all bets are off!

Some here have come up with great suggestions of exotic guns and assorted weapons, but their problem is just that, they are exotic. Unless your willing to go out of your way right now (before the zombie apocalypse) and spend ridiculous amounts of money, these type of guns are simply not feasible. Another problem with them is often the more unique the gun, the more unique the ammo. If your gonna go the gun route, make sure it uses ammo that is readily and easily available. In other words, the .22 Long Rifle (or .22 LR).
Easily the most common ammunition in America today, you can find it everywhere and buy it in bulk. If you thinking of proactively hoarding, these bullets sell for around $0.04 each. Otherwise, if your in the heat of zombieville, this ammo will be everywhere from gun shops to sporting goods stores to your local Wal-Mart (side note: during a zombie outbreak, try and stay away from malls and big stores unless absolutely necessary. Other people will flock to these with a false sense of security, some will most probably have been bitten and your just asking for trouble in those type of situations).
Another advantage of the .22 is it's relatively quiet report. Remember, zombies will be attracted to noise. You'll be better off having to fight off every zombie in a 1 mile radius then every zombie in a 5 mile one.
Also the .22 is known for its low recoil. This is extremely important when someone has little to no experience in shooting firearms. Aiming becomes a lot easier and more intuitive.
Now, with that said, the .22 should already be your ammo of choice, but if you need more convincing, here's another huge advantage. It's pretty much the only cartridge that will fit in both rifles AND handguns. That's good for you because if your like me and believe in carrying multiple weapons, the same ammo will work for both your long and medium range defense. Using the same ammo means you have less to carry AND you are more adaptable to different situations.
Now for short range. Like I said before, there are some really cool looking knives out there. Their biggest problem is also just that. A weapon that looks cool is usually designed for just that. Looking good. But if they were put in use, because of their esthetically focused design, they break real easy.
Chainsaws sound like a great idea, but they can run out of gas and are surprisingly heavy and cumbersome when your already carrying guns, bullets, water, food, and running for your life. Not only that but the few seconds it will take you to switch from medium range (handgun) to close range, could be used for killing more zombies. You have to drop the handgun, flip the on switch, pull the starter cord and asses the closes target. In a zombie attack, those few seconds are all that are needed for you to go from healthy mankind avenger, to having a diet rich in brains.
Again, I'm repeating myself, but I think your best bet is to stick with common and easy to find. The crowbar is easily your best friend. It's lightweight, small and easy to carry and can take out a zombie with one good swing to the head.
The biggest problem with blades at close range is they get stuck in skulls. With something like a machete, sometimes you'll slice right threw and be able to take another target within half a second, but every now and then, you'll have to kick the blade out of a zombie's head. That's a precious second or two that could be the difference between life and death. Crowbars don't have that problem, are just as effective and can be found literally anywhere and everywhere: houses, corner stores, car trunks, yup everywhere.
So, to recap, favorite .22 LR rifle with a scope, .22 handgun (Like a Ruger) and a crowbar. Good luck and Godspeed.

AK-47 on semiautomatic mode is best since it has great stopping power and is long ranged. The best melee weapon would have to be an axe, if u don't have an axe use something that you can swing around easily. Don't use weapons like a knife or hammer since it is short ranged unless that's the only weapon you have. Although, always keep a 12 gauge shotgun handy for those face to face encounters.

The gun thing is just asking for trouble. How many times have we seen the heavily armed movie heroes shoot at the zombies until they run out of ammo, only to throw their guns to the ground in anger before being ripped apart in slow-motion by the steadily-advancing mob? Anything that requires preparation or certainly RELOADING is less than ideal during a zombie attack. You've got to figure that this is a marathron, not a sprint...You're going to need to kill HUNDREDS of zombies over the course of hours or even days in order to survive.
So I'd probably go with something that requires no fuel at all, like a flaming samurai sword (provided I had time to figure out how to use the thing). Flamethrowers sound like fun, yes. However let's remember the only thing worse then fighting off Zombies is fighting of flaming zombies. The goal is to strike the head, and better yet remove the head - which leads me to believe the chainsaw was your best suggestion.
Me, I'd use a Halberd - I think the length is perfect, you don't want to get too close, you can swing this good and bluntly hit the head if not remove it.

A short flight to my aircraft carrier just off Komodo Island which I've kept loaded with supplies and is manned by test tube raised vegetarians that have never had contact with the mainland. Assuming that that alone isn't the cause of the zombie infestation of course, but if I'm wrong I'd quickly retreat to the island itself. Why? Komodo Dragons eat corpses. LOL, according to Zombie lore, the way to kill them is to destroy their brain or sever their brain from the rest of their body. .22 LR lack the power to do this effectively. Countless people have survived .22 shots to the head, as the projectile is so small that it tends to go through things rather than destroy them. It can indeed kill, and I wouldn't volunteer to be hit with one, but it's not exactly a great anti-personnel round.
Also, there are MANY rounds that work in both handguns and rifles/carbines. .357 magnum, .38 special, .44 magnum, .44 special, 9MM and .45ACP are just a few common examples.
I like your idea of choosing something that it is common and relatively available, and I also like the idea of matching your primary weapon and sidearm to the same ammo. A Tommy gun and a H&K USP both in .45ACP could make a nice set as one round from either would really give a Zombie a headache. A lever action .357 magnum carbine and revolver would work great for those who prefer slower fire, longer range and better penetration, but they are a tad slower to reload and have let ammo capacity.
A 9MM Glock with a high capacity magazine and a Browning 9MM carbine could also make a nice pair as the ammo for these is super common and is used by most police officers. Unfortunately, this round isn't terribly powerful and might not always destroy the zombie's brain with a single hit, unless you are using well placed shots and hollow point ammunition.

The best melee weapon to use is a xialion spade, it has a range of about 6 feet, it has the capability of breaking the skull and decapitation, and is light weight.
