To all the British, UK, and British English speaking and writing folks at Mahalo...

It would be interesting to see what

"The Man and the Woman and the Kids on the Street" think...

http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/british/images/vc190ap2.jpg

... when it comes to the differences between American English and British English. Wembling along here .........

There are lots of searches on wikis and places like: http://www2.gsu.edu/~wwwesl/egw/jones/spelling.htm and wikis and the like.

Would like to see what real people say and why.
For example:
Straight away in British means Right away in American

I had to learn that one while doing business with the British.
Help us all be more savvy talking, eh?

How the British would say it.

Toilet - not washroom or restroom
Crisps - not potato chips
Chips - not fries
red sauce - not catsup
lift - not elevator
queue up - not line up
Source(s):
many visits to England.

Asker's Rating:
• great insight. I will remember what "LIFT" means.
still need to see more business words...... hmmmmmm..........
I will do more research straight away!

Many of those, esp washroom and elevator will be understood if you use them. Your problem would be more if they say something like "The lift is around that corner" and you don't know what they're talking about.

Generally Brits see enough American film and TV to know the most everyday words.

My fiance is British and I am American... Trust me the battle of words and phrases is daily routine in our house with hilarious results!

Lorry = Truck
Lift = Elevator
Kitchen Cloth = Paper Towel (hate that one)
Router = Router (but pronounced annoyingly)
Flat = Apartment
Mobile = Cell Phone

You want more, just ask, never a dull word battle here, haha!!
