How would you explain/display Entrepreneurship for a group of 17-year olds?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

There is no need to sugarcoat information for teenagers in this age group. At 17, these kids are capable of grasping adult concepts, and it is important that they do. You are talking about a group of people that may or may not be entering the workforce in about a year, and developing a basic understanding of business, as well as entrepreneurship, is vital to their success. I would explain this from a textbook perspective and then give them an opportunity to experiment with entrepreneurship themselves in a simulated business environment.

Explain to them the differences between owning your own business and working for others, with all of the pros and cons of each. I would emphasize that being an entrepreneur is not right for everyone and identify the personality traits and skills that make one a successful business owner.I would also discuss all of the aspects of owning a business that a person has to consider, such as risk, knowledge, capital, and labor.

For a more hands on understanding of entrepreneurship versus working for someone else, allow the group to brainstorm for ideas for a new company together. Let them work together to decide leadership roles and other roles in the new "company" and play those roles out. I think you will be impressed what a group of kids this age can come up with on their own.

The difference between 'working for' and 'working on' a business is patience, sacrifice, dedication, persistence, preserverance, sacrifice....yeah, it needs to be said twice. When you work for someone else, your day is done when you punch out, get a weekly paycheck and your weekends are your own. However, when you decide to venture off on your own, your life is no longer your own. You belong to your clients/customers in the very early stages. You may be up until 10/11 at night working on proposals, marketing concepts, etc on how to get your name out there. Week after week will go by and no steady paycheck. It's one of the scariest moves and toughest things to start out doing, but if you can hold out and preservere, the rewards are worth it.

In short, Entrepreneurship is a courageous choice to "create" a living as opposed to simply "making" a living. The rewards of the latter are infinite.

In my opinion, there is no secret on how to explain Entrepreneurship to a teen who is interested and motivated to understand it. I have found all teens that I have mentored or coached, possess the necessary tools to understand Entrepreneurship. I do believe, however, that many are not being taught the heart of entrepreneurship..and that is passion, following their intuition, setting realistic expectations and the psychology of the classic entrepreneur. Also they need to be shown how to work in a career that they love, with money being an afterthought.
