How would you compare Sydney Crosby to the greats, Mario Lemieux, Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe in talent and character?
. When you talk about National Hockey League greats you have to include Mario Lemieux, Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe. Where would you place Sydney Crosby among these three or does his character and lack of leadership qualities exclude him? Is he really as talented as any of the three Hall of Famers? Does he even come close to having the character qualities of a Steve Yzerman or Joe Sakic? Will he ever earn the respect of his opponents as not only a Hockey player, but as a person? He has taken some really cheap shots at opponents and it appears that officials are willing to ignore many of them; why?

It’s very hard for me to look at someone like Sidney Crosby and feel that he measures up to the Wayne Gretzky or Mario Lemieuxs of the Hockey world. I think most likely that is because I grew up watching those guys just absolutely dominate the sport and I have a special place in my heart for them. As with most other sports, the guys today just don’t seem to have the same likability factor as they did when I was younger. Maybe that’s just a part of growing up, but I think it is more than that.
There’s a reason Gretzky’s nickname was “The Great One” and I don’t think someone like Sidney Crosby can surpass him. As you mentioned, I would take a guy like Steve Yzerman over Crosby because while Crosby might technically be more talented, he doesn’t have the intangibles Stevey Y did. Maybe that’s just the old fogey in me starting to surface, but it makes me sick to see Crosby put next to Lemieux and others.
