How would one renounce their American citizenship?

What could you gain or lose from doing so? Where could you go if you don't have citizenship to any country? What is the process?
Tip for best answer: M$6.05
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The first STEP in renouncing American Citizenship is to gain citizenship of another country of your choice. While it is not really required to get a second citizenship, this is the only way for a person to be protected from not being stateless once you renounce your American citizenship.

Some renounce their citizenship because they think that it can save them from their tax obligations which is getting higher. http://www.immigrationdirect.com/

I would "denounce" it like this:

"You stupid citizenship, what have you done for me lately! Nothing! Freedom to vote, freedom of speech, blah! I hate you citizenship!"

If you really do wish to "renounce" your U.S. citizenship, you can find that information on the U.S. State Department website:

http://travel.state.gov/law/citizenship/citizenship_776.html

However, if you are looking to acquire dual citizenship, you may not need to lose your U.S citizenship. The U.S. State Department has some brief answers on their website as well:

The real question is why would you want to denounce your citizenship. Typically people denounce their citizenship because they obtained a new one and the laws of either country prohibits dual citizenship. For that reason, it may need to be done.

But if the reason is more politically inclined, such as not agreeing with the elected officials, then it is not a very good reason to do so. It's key to keep in mind that many other countries (if not all other countries) have problems with their leadership and making the assumption that denouncing one citizenship for another with better "representation" is just a false hope. The truth of the matter is, if you disagree with your leadership, do something about it rather than moving on. What can be done will differ from one country to another.

Renouncing your US citizenship can be as simple as making a statement of formal renunciation of nationality before a diplomatic or consular officer of the United States in a foreign state. What you lose would be all rights as a US citizen and you would gain nothing. A stateless person or one with no citizenship in any country is very limited in where they can go and what they can do as a unprotected citizen. Traveling overseas or crossing any border would require some proof of citizenship so in most cases you would not be allowed to leave the country you were in when you made the renouncement and most countries will not allow a stateless person to reside within their borders so you would in most cases find yourself in serious trouble with the threat of expulsion or deportation very likely. As a stateless citizen who renounced their US citizenship you can still be extradited to the United States where you would then no longer be a citizen because the act of renunciation is irrevocable.
