How will non-profits fair during the downturn in the economy?

Given the potential rise in clients for social services oriented non-profits and the probable decline in funding due to government cutbacks and the lack of capital floating around..what will the effect be? Will individuals volunteer more? Will people be more generous to non-profits helping those who are worse off than they? Will the "net" help?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

As with any business, it depends. It depends on what they sell. It also depends on whether they get grants from governmental sources.

The non-profit that I run is doing well for two reasons: The services are in DIRE need right now (therapy) and I avoid using grants or rely on sources of money outside of the company.

I think donations will go down. I think grants will certainly dry up. If you rely on these things, you might find yourself having difficulties.

Hi DrMatt..thanks for the answer. I have a followup question. I see on your website that you provide a number of low fee courses. Is this a supplementary source of funding that provides the addition you need to run the foundation over the fees for direct counselling? I.e, do you generate enough revenue? I am presently the manager of a non-profit counselling service in BC and historically the organization has struggled for funds and while I am building plans to move them in a more positive direction, the current economic tsunami washing over us all is an added dimension for a small rural community as ours.
