During the age of bombardment, when comets and other space junk with impacting the Earth, the water for the oceans was delivered. Think about all the vaporized water that was formed by those impacts on a molten planet. As the planet cooled, the vapor condensed and water gathered on the surface. Without that water, no life as we know it.
