The Alaskan gold rush started later than the Californian one by almost forty years, in 1896. Keish (Skookum Jim Mason) was leading a party of people including his sister, Kate Carmack. It is unclear who actually made the discovery, but one of the party discovered rich placer gold deposits in Bonanza (Rabbit) Creek, Yukon.
When the news became public a vast number of people migrated to the area from as far afield as New York, South Africa, The U.K and Australia.
The miners endured awful conditions, there is a book describing this, one of the last written by Jules Verne, "The Volcano of Gold", it deals with the terrible hardships endured by the gold-seekers in the Klondike. The book was written circa 1899 but for some reason was not published until 1989.
Although the conditions were harsh for the "Forty Niners" of California, it was worse in Alaska, mainly due to the climate. This and the later date are the main differences between the two gold rushes.
