This school was the be-all-and-end-all of art in 19th century Paris, supporting the classical realism found in religious and historical painting. The newly discovered medium of photography, that deplorable epitome of realism, mirrored the Académie's philosophy that art's raison d'être should follow a purist view of form and, without error, imitate life.
A collective of artists spurned this, preferring instead to rebel against the system and prove that art is visceral emotion in motion. Impressionist painting was the first step ''outside the box'' that our collective consciousness took in recorded history, proving that life, and vision, isn't always in perfect focus and color. These spontaneous imperfections, rather, lend their subjects and landscapes their own brand of subtle realism, in a way creating a living portrait that no photograph could compare to.
