How useful is social bookmarking?
- Locating sites you found before? (What bookmarks were first for!)
- Finding sites likely to be of interest?
- Discovering people with similar interests?
- Keeping in touch with people?
- Other things?
Personally once upon a time I used to find delcious useful for keeping track of all the good sites I'd found. But now Firefox does that just as well and much more easily.

I don't use it like a lot of folks do though... I use it to qualify my Google searches. I hit the "thumbs up" button occasionally because it's easy and the online archive can act as a good personal search engine - but most of the reason that I have it installed is because of how the toolbar interacts with Google.
Here, you can see that I've done a search and a few results have been returned. One special result has been found (stumbled) and rated by another Stumbleupon user. This is valuable information because I have quickly narrowed the Google results and would click that site first rather than one closer to the top.
In this context, Stumbleupon is non-intrusive and adds significant value to both my browser and my Internet experience as a whole.
Synop.it is one of the most interesting social bookmark type initiatives that I've seen in a while.
This service is almost the opposite of Stumbleupon. When you come across an interesting article (in your Twitter stream for example) that you would like to read later, you press the Synop.it bookmarklet button. If the article has a human written summary, you can read it and save the article for later. If the article does not yet have a summary, you can write one yourself or request that one be created. This service is very interesting to me.

For example, today I was looking for a site that showed a snippet of text very large in many different fonts. I went to my delicious account and guessed at the tags I assigned to it: `tools` and `fonts`. I visited my Delicious bookmarks page for those two tags and re-discovered the site: flipping typical.
It's just a breathe of fresh air, because I would never have thought that 'flipping typical' would be the name of the site, and yet, there it is - I just re-discovered a useful site. When I discover some of these sites, it's through RSS or Twitter, and I don't have a use for them at the time, but I know I will want to re-discover them later.
Another common use is to share a wish list. Many people use Delicious tags to define what items they want. Many people use tags like 'wishlist' or 'iwant' for this.
Delicious is also good to discover amazing links from your friends. If you add friends to your network, you can then subscribe to your network to easily discover links your friends have found interesting.
Overall, I find it quite interesting and useful at the same time. The network aspect is quite useful because generally your network is full of extremely relevant links.
I love Delicious and use it everyday.

I used to like delcious for its ability to tag sites like that. But now it's almost ludicrously easily to find any site you ever liked again with Firefox's built-in features.
I did find that looking up the sites marked by people who'd marked any given site was quite useful, but I never really did that very often.
I don't have any friends on these websites, so it's not quite "social" to me, more as a tool.

I found del.icio.us was a great way to "archive" my bookmarks, and it came in real handy when I needed to find a related article when I blogged daily.
I found I occasionally checked out other peoples bookmarks and occasionally met people with similar interests, but mostly it was for my personal collecting and archiving of great links. And there was always a chance that others would bookmark your work and it would end up going viral.

In school I found myself working on many different public computers. Having my bookmarks on delicious was very convenient. Thank goodness I never really liked ma.gnolia.com. Those poor folks had some file/disk corruption problems and an incomplete backup process. They are still trying to come back.
I'm just now starting to subscribe to tags. Time to do some cleaning up of all my RSS subscriptions though. My google reader looking worse than my e-mail inbox.

As Twitter has exploded I've found that people have moved their link-sharring to Twitter. This means that bookmarking sites, which were always very niche, are even less important to the mass audience.
Delicious.com was the best one every built in terms of scale and features, but it seems to have been forgotten by Yahoo.

Skitch is free (and wicked awesome) software that is made up of a downloadable app and image hosting service. It's built for this exact sort of page clipping. I use it a lot.
Yeah "flagging up" quality sites is really what I use Stumbleupon for. When I see that someone has stumbled the page and maybe even reviewed it, I immediately jump to that page first.

I gather you don't use the social aspect at all, other than using the number of SU users that liked a site as an indicator of quality.
