Painting an old tv cart and using it as a bookshelf: need advice on painting.

So I finished an old black matted tv cart out of a neighbor's garbage this morning (Don't ask.). I cleaned it up to get all of the dust and g--k off it and I want to paint it. It looks like there's a black "wallpaper' on it so I figured I would just spraypaint over that and looks like the wood itself it like a matte board (I dunno the real names for these things).

I just need to crazy glue a couple parts back on (see picture). I want to spraypaint it either white or a wood/grain color (Almond?) but i don't know what might look good. Reason i don't want it black is because it looks "blah" and i'd rather have it a different color so it doesn't pick up dust as much.

Suggestions welcome!

It looks it is melamine. You need to use the right paint. You can buy melamine paint, or melamine primer, then spray paint it. Also, it will work better if you sand it lightly, wipe off thoroughly with a damp cloth, washing it with TSP will remove all the dirt, grime and greasy residue to ensure the surface is clean and ready to paint.

I would go with white as it will look clean and crisp. Whereas, the almond colour or woodgrain might look kind of cheap and might look messy. You could try it though on part of it and if you don't like it, it would be easy to paint white.

You can take the shelf part into a home improvement store ask them what to use to paint it if you are unsure of the material.

Also, I worked in a hardware store with a very busy paint department, I've learned a lot about paint and I've also painted melamine.

Good answer. The only thing I would add is if you are going to paint a light color like white over a dark color like black, you will probably want to paint it with at least 2 coats. Paint the 1st coat, let it dry, then paint it again. This will ensure that the color underneath does not show through.

Ok, the wood might be particle board. Now how can I tell if its melamine? It's hard to tell in the photo, but there are a few spots where there are bubbles on the top of the cart.

I do have white spray paint somewhere so I'll try it tomorrow.

@brandy76 has perfect advice... but before you decide on a final color, look at the colors in your room. You might want to pick a warmer color. If white works without standing out like a sore thumb then, go for it!

I also thought you could decoupage some superhero characters on it!

Sky blue for most of the outer part of my room, the rest is white. 2nd floor/attic/loft is my room.

All answers above are good but before it is important to sand surfaces light with high grit sand paper, the higher the grit the lighter. Then primer set and paint as you wish. By sanding the surface lightly gives the primer better a better hold and once done all the steps sufficiently it should try to peel later.

good plan to take it to Home Depot and identify the material. plastic is VERY hard to get paint to adhere to. also elmer's wood glue (even for particle board) or elmer's white glue is better than crazy glue for porous surfaces. possibly a better alternative is a very very light "wash" of thinned out paint, so there is no surface coating to peel. good luck!
