Step 1
Damp down the microwave by steaming a bowl of water ( you can put a few drops of vanilla essence in the water if you want )
Step 2
Empty a whole pack of bicarb of soda into the microwave and sort of pat it around on the walls and inside top, like thick paste.....its not easy but try to get into every corner. Let dry for about an hour
Step 3
Rinse out the bicarb
Step 4
Repeat ( sorry but it will probably take two goes at this )
Step 5
Get a damp cloth and wipe down the inside with vanilla essence
Should be fine after this

Try vinegar.
There are a few different ways you can do this. Some people say to bring a cup of vinegar to a boil and then use the vinegar alone to scrub the microwave and anything else that was affected.
Others suggest putting the vinegar in a microwave safe glass, running the microwave to allow the vinegar to come to a boil, and then simply removing the glass. The theory is that the scent of the vinegar "cooking" in the microwave will overpower the burnt smell.
You can also make a solution of half vinegar/half water and put it in a cleaning bottle. Spray it inside the microwave and on any other surfaces and use it to clean and eliminate the stench.
Hope something helps. That has to smell awful!

As far as smell, thats a little harder. I would turn to the all purpose wonder cleaners: Vinegar and/or baking soda. Always do wonders for me.
I'd guess that baking soda would be better at taking out the smell, just cause it does for my carpets.

We had the same problem with a bag of popcorn....YUK! I sliced a lemon, put it in a cup of water and set the timer to 2 minutes. After that the smell was much less offensive.
The baking soda and vinegar solutions work well too. The link below offers some of the same suggestions. Hope this helps.

Fill a small microwave safe bowl or measuring cup about half full with vinegar and, set for a minute or two on high and let it go. Leave it in there for a bit before removing.
Wipe down the interior with a damp cloth and you should be fine. If the smell does linger, take a spray bottle with vinegar and lightly mist the inside and wipe again.
If the kitchen itself still smells, take the spray bottle of vinegar again and squirt a few times through the air. I don't use chemical-laden air freshers - it's vinegar all the way for me.

How to get a smell out of a microwave?
Best answer will go to whomever comes up with the solution that works!
My son made Ramen in the microwave... only problem is, he forgot to put the water in the bowl! The noodles almost caught on fire, smoked up the house and microwave. We managed to get the smell out of the house and furniture (thank you Febreze!), but the microwave stinks!
We got it cleaned up fine, but now, when it's run, the microwave emits and horrible stench. Short of getting rid of it, what can we do to make the microwave stop stinking, that's not too technically advanced! (I don't want to take the microwave completely apart here! LOL)
Thanks!

Okay - we tried both of those --boiling it and spraying it and the smell is still there. Though I'll admit it's slightly better. I'm thinking we might have to take it apart and get the fan and all that too but I sort of hoped the vinegar would work!

What I do to clean my microwave is put a bowl of water in there for about five minutes. Everything comes off perfectly. As far as smell, thats a little harder. I would turn to the all purpose wonder cleaners: Vinegar and/or baking soda. Always do wonders for me.
I'd guess that baking soda would be better at taking out the smell, just cause it does for my carpets.

We tried baking soda, both putting a dish of it in there and letting it sit overnight and also putting a paste in there and cleaning it. Though it smells still, we probably now have the cleanest microwave in the country. Thanks for trying!

We don't have oranges... I tried it with lemons and limes and the same things. Do you think the oranges are essential to it working? I was hoping lemons and limes would be similar. If we must try oranges, I'm game for going and buying some!

The citrus peels are for absorption, I am sure you can use lemon peels....they will make your microwave smell lemony fresh. :) - Just remember, one Orange has more peels then one lemon....but either or will work.

The best and the natural way. Use lime water. Dilute lime water of one lemon in half glass of water and wipe the microwave oven with it. If it is too dirty, use vinegar + baking soda + lime water. But this combination may cause harm to microwave surface so try it on small patch.

Thanks! I have some great essential oils that I like to spray in the air. They smell divine and are all natural. A little carrier that's light and a mist - yummy! Unfortunately, vinegar didn't do the trick for us. (pout)

I hadn't thought about pine cleaner... 10 minutes? I worry about all the chemicals with that though - doesn't it make the food taste weird for awhile?

Take the microwave out in a 14ft aluminum boat, to the middle of a lake and slowly lower the microwave into the water. Once its fully submerged, let go. This way the smell is gone and you didn't get all wet :)

Hi! I found that the best way to get an odor out of a microwave is to put half water and half white vinegar in a bowl. Then microwave for a minute. Let it cool down and then wipe the inside walls and dish of the microwave. The next step is to take lemon slices and squeeze the juice in a bowl with water. Put the slices of lemon in the bowl as well. Microwave that for a minute and let it stand so it can get into every nook and cranny of the microwave. Your microwave will be clean and smell lemony fresh!
