Start with the first letter of both your first and last name. Those two letters are the pinnacle, focal point of your signature. Research different ways to write those two particular letters by studying different fonts, styles, even calligraphy. When you finally decide on a style for your initials, the rest of your name will flow naturally within that style.

Something else you can do is experiment with an arcane script, like the old German Sütterlin, and tune it to what you need; but no matter what you do, come up with something that's not only unique, but fun to do. Look at other people's weird and or cool signatures and find something to put your own flair on.

My signature is pretty darn similar to the cursive I learned when I was a kid. This is because I really like how the first letters of my first and last name come across when using this script. (C and P). The script is very curvy, easy to read, and has beautiful lines.
The problem with my signature is I have to spend like 30 seconds writing it. The "scrawled" version of my signature isn't nearly as cool, because it's just the capitol "C" and "P" with a bunch of wavy behind it. But it still works.
Now my dad's signature is completely different, It's all angles and drama. I don't know how he came up with it, but I have seen his signature as a kid, so I know that he made a conscious decision to change it at some time.
Just have fun with the process.

It's better to have a signature that doesn't take a long time to write, in case you're in a hurry. You don't have to write your full name, maybe only initials. ex: S.M. or maybe your first name with the initial of your last name, ex: Sally M. This makes it easier to invent a nice signature that takes a shorter time to write.
Write in cursive. Signatures do not have to be in cursive, but more than half of the time, they are. Make the first letter in your name the biggest of them all. Modify the letters a bit to make them more nice and creative.
Be creative. Add hearts or stars or swizzles, or anything interesting.
Add a touch next to your name, like: xoxo or PEACE or WITH LOVE. Add curves to your letters.
Squiggle! It may sound weird, but it would take AGES to write the letters in your name.

You cannot have a good signature unless you have a good penmanship. Practice having a good penmanship first before creating a signature for yourself. I see many artistic signatures like animal drawing at the end of the stroke or signatures that have chinese/kanji characters but actually it doesn't matter. Remember that signatures are important in legal aspects so make sure that you only have one signature.

Make it unique in some way. I came up with mine when I was in grade school, I was just messing around and wanted to see if I could write both my fore and surnames without picking up my pen; and so I doodled on my paper for a few hours until I came up with something and was actually able to make it look really cool and have been doing it that way ever since. Something else you can do is experiment with an arcane script, like the old German Sütterlin, and tune it to what you need; but no matter what you do, come up with something that's not only unique, but fun to do. Look at other people's weird and or cool signatures and find something to put your own flair on.

Depends on your definition of "beautiful," I suppose. Once you find some signatures you like, then practice. practice, practice writing your name in different ways until you find the way you like best. My signature is pretty darn similar to the cursive I learned when I was a kid. This is because I really like how the first letters of my first and last name come across when using this script. (C and P). The script is very curvy, easy to read, and has beautiful lines.

Mine is like that too. I just write it in cursive and it takes so long, but I don't know how to shorten it.

I like your question, it's something I have been wondering myself. I did some searching and I found this website that really worked for me. You try in your name then you go through all these fonts and sizes to make your signature. Mostly this is used for online signing but if you want to write it yourself, I would suggest printing it out and practicing without, you can use it as a template. http://www.mylivesignature.com/

I can't believe I made so many spelling errors! That 'without' is supposed to be 'with it' and the 'try' was supposed to be 'type' Sorry! I use spellcheck but it doesn't check stuff like that! :D
