You are supposed to apply it to the back of your hand close to your wrist. I usually go with something that blends well or maybe just a little darker than my actual skin tone. You can go to a makeup counter and have them help you and you can check out different colors for free. If you go to a store like Walgreens or a cosmetic store you would have to buy the product first without trying it first so it is easy to end up wasting money if you don't like it when you get home. It can be frustrating when buying makeup. I can't tell you how much money I have wasted on lipsticks that I didn't like once I bought them.

• Thanks for your response. I agree, shopping for makeup in a drugstore is a pain! I too have several lipsticks, blushes, foundations, eyeshadow (the list goes on) that didn't work for some reason or another.

I was advised to apply the tester foundation on the cheek and to see if it goes invisible on the skin without giving a pink shade to your skin. Then it is your color.

Apply a small amount of the foundation on either your jaw line or on your hand (the area between your wrist and your thumb). The color must blend with your skin color. It shouldn't be too light or too dark.

It is important to be in the correct lighting. Usually, the better makeup counters will have lighting available just for this, but some do not. You want a pure light, as close to sunlight as possible. Apply a small amount to the back of your hand, but keep in mind that sometimes a person is more tan on the back of the hand than the face, especially if they use a foundation with sunscreen in it, so keep that in mind. If this describes you, I would apply the foundation to clean, make-up free facial skin to check the tone.
