It won't matter because no one will see it during the ceremony. It only matters if you are going to stay in that dress after graduation or not. If you are going to change right after the graduation ceremony then just go with a plain but comfortable dress. If it is a long ceremony you want to be comfy. That is what I would take into consideration.

Personal preference, but I would recommend that you base your decision on two key ideas:

#1. What are you doing immediately after graduation? You probably won't feel like going home to change after you graduate before you go wherever it is that you're headed to celebrate.

#2. How bulky is the dress? Obviously, you don't want to wear anything that will appear to give you more bulk than is natural.

Seems to me that it would be a lot more comfortable to wear pants.

I think that would depend on: 1. If your school has a policy regarding what you can wear underneath. 2. What is considered acceptable among your peers. 3. The expected temperature at the time you will be wearing it.
