As a long standing Twitter user, I can tell you that nothing, and I mean NOTHING, will lose you followers faster than sponsored tweets. Serious tweeters hate spam.
I not only unfollow folks if they start sponsored tweets, I look to see who my followers are, and I block them if they're selling stuff through twitter.
For example, one of my interest groups has to do with scrapbooking. I post links to articles and how-tos that I write about scrapbooking topics, as well as links to events and interesting articles by others.

Let's say you have a skill... building web sites or programming or something else.
1. Search twitter for 'help with ' and whatever your skill is, or 'looking for ' and your skill. You can use Hootsuite to do some pretty cool boolean searches.
2. Contact those people and offer a good old fashioned exchange of services for money. (first contact via @ reply, then DM or email if they follow you)
4. Profit!
It helps if you can accept payment via paypal, since almost everyone uses it.
Like anything, be prepared for rejection... many of the people you contact will be looking for something for free, but some of them will be willing to pay.
