How to use however properly in a sentence?

Should however always go at the first of a sentence, or can it stand in the middle or end? What about proper punctuation?

I went to the store today, however there was no bread. (should a semi-colon be used?)
I went to the store today there was no bread, however.
I went to the store today. However, there was no bread.

Which of these are correct and apply proper punctuation. I can't remember this from school, it's been to long. Then when I look it up, I see different stuff.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

Conjunctive adverbs connect independent clauses and function as both adverbs and conjunctions. They can be placed in different positions in a clause.

The movie was boring; however, the friends watched it until the end.
The movie was boring; the friends, however, watched it until the end.
The movie was boring. The friends watched it until the end, however.

examples of conjunctive adverbs: however, also, anyway, besides, certainly, finally, consequently, moreover, similarly, indeed, therefore, thus, meanwhile, otherwise
Independent clauses connected by a conjunctive adverb should be separated by a semicolon or a period and not by a comma.

Strunk & White online says:

"However. In the meaning "nevertheless", not to come first in its sentence or clause.

For example:

The roads were almost impassable. However, we at last succeeded in reaching camp. The roads were almost impassable. At last, however, we succeeded in reaching camp.

When however comes first, it means in whatever way or to whatever extent.

For example:

However you advise him, he will probably do as he thinks best.
However discouraging the prospect, he never lost heart.

Hope this helps.
