How to organize a Christmas Party at your workplace?

This year is my turn to organize a Christmas Party at my office. I need some advices on how to do that. What music should I bring? What drinks and what appetizers are served at these parties? Can I ask my colleagues to bring their friends? Balloons or not? Stuff like this. I could really use some examples because I’m terrible at organizing parties and I want to learn everything before the big day!

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Organizing a party in the workplace is not that easy and takes a lot of preparation and effort on the part of the organizer but proper planning ahead makes it easier especially when everybody cooperates.
These are some tips to help you organize an office Christmas party:
*Schedule the party at least one month in advance.
*Know how many and who will attend the party so that you can plan for the venue and food. You can email or post a note on the bulletin board all the names of employees and create a checklist of them and opposite their names if the will be attending or not.
*Collaborate with big bosses about the mechanics and the preparation and ask others if they are willing to share expenses for contribution, how much they are willing to contribute or if they prefer potlock or catering instead.
*It is good to include everybody when organizing like having a food committee, games committee, decorations committee and many others. In this way, everyone is involved with the party and you will not feel so overwhelmed.
*In terms of food, check out what people prefer, allergies, drinks, and ect.
*Exchanging gift is fun too so ask people how much is the minimum amount they are willing to give.
*Ask anyone who is willing to perform in a program. It could be a singing number or dance number, etc.
With all of the above considerations you will likely to have a very merry Christmas party where everyone enjoys and build camaraderie among office workers.

Each company holiday party will be different depending on the crowd and type of business, so the best thing I can recommend is to get advice from others who have organized it in the past or employees that have been around for a long time at the company. There's generally always one person who is always remembering birthdays or planning events, that is a great person to ask for help. Find out what others have planned in the past and how it worked out.

Some things to remember regardless of the type of party:
*Find a location (if not held at the place of business) that will host the party
*Make a guest list; if in the past spouses/significant others have been permitted, plan for them to attend
*Have something for everyone; think about food, beverages, music, activities and entertainment that would be suited for a variety of people, rather than just a few with unique or eccentric preferences
*Remember it's supposed to be fun! Don't stress over the small things, just enjoy the good time with your co-workers!
